Play Ball!

  • The final spring game has been played, the roster has been cut to twenty-five, and the team is headed to Baltimore. That, my friends, can only mean one thing, it's time for hardball.

The Sox finished up the spring schedule strong, defeating the Brewers in Milwaukee Saturday, 7-2. Frank Castillo pitched another solid four innings, allowing no runs, one hit, and sending back five Brewers on strikes. Castillo has by far been the Sox next best pitcher behind Pedro this spring, and whether he's actually in the number two slot in the rotation or not, right now he's the second best starter on the team.

Trot Nixon slammed his team leading seventh homer of the spring, and the Sox finished the schedule with a Major League leading 48 homers. Let's hope that both Trot and the team can keep hitting the tall jack into and thru the season.

But alas, all the great spring numbers are now truly meaningless, it's time to do it where the numbers count.

  • As I mentioned above the team was finally cut down to twenty-five and there was somewhat of a surprise, though it was kind of obvious it was coming.

Earlier in the week Kent Mercker was released from the team which opened the door for Pete Schourek to take the left-handed spot in the pen, and that's exactly what happened. We also found at the beginning of the week that Shea Hillenbrand would open the season with the team in Baltimore. Will this decision, it looked as though Craig Grebeck's tenure with the team was soon to close. But there was also the chance that Lou Merloni would be moved since he still had options left to go to AAA.

Well, it was announced on MLB.com today that the Sox did indeed option Merloni to Pawtucket and moved the minor league contracts of both Schourek and Grebeck to Boston. I'm sure Merloni isn't happy with the decision, but rest assured we have not seen that last of him, as he will be the first to get the call if an infield spot other than firstbase opens. Also optioned to AAA were Morgan Burkhart and Sunny Kim.

So it looks like Jimy and Duke are content in opening the season with Grebeck as the starting short stop with Mike Lansing backing him up. I also think there's an outside possibility that Hillenbrand may end up the starting third baseman as Chris Stynes has got the call at second the last two spring games. Seems Jose Offerman may not be as ready as we all would have liked.

  • Rounding out the final cuts, Mike Neill, Todd Erdos, and Trevor Miller were all sent to Minor League camp, along with six players officially being placed on the disabled list. Brett Saberhagen (retroactive 3/30), David Cone (retroactive 3/21), Juan Pena (retroactive 3/21), Hipolito Pichardo (retroactive 3/21), and John Valentin (retroactive 3/21) were all put on the 15-Day DL. Brice Florie (retroactive 3/31), still recovering his sight, was placed on the 60-Day DL to open the season.

  • At this point I was planning on adding a link here to my Spring Breakdown and give my take on everything that happened this spring from the Carl Everett saga, to the Nomar issue, to the hot spring of Trot Nixon and Shea Hillenbrand. But some of the sources I use for my information have not updated thru the end of the season just yet. So you'll just have to wait one more day, but since there's no game today, it may work out better since I'll need something to talk about for Monday morning.

  • Just a reminder to anyone who is interested, I am looking for people who would be willing to help me out with game recaps during the season. If you're interested contact me via email and I'll explain the details and expectations of the job. Just keep in mind though, I'm not looking for just anyone to do this. It's vital that you be reliable and follow a few of the rules I'll lay out upon contact. This job also won't necessarily be limited to just one person. The more input and opinions, the better.
