WEEI wasn't broadcasting to the internet while I was at work, so I missed out on the beat down the Sox put on the Expos. Most of the scoring came deep into the game, but when it came, it came in bunches. The big bats of the day belonged to Wilton Veras and Morgan Burkhart who combined to go 6-6 4R 6RBI and 2HRs. Veras is a long shot at best to make the team, the combo of a horrible 2000 season, the return of Johnny V, and the arrival of Chris Stynes, pretty much guarantees Veras a spot on the AAA roster. A strong spring though could do wonders for him as he developes in the 3B of the future we hope he will be. Burkhardt on the other hand is fighting it out with Brian Daubach, Juan Diaz, Dante Bichette, Scott Hatteberg, and to a lesser extent Jose Offerman and possibly John Valentin for playing time at first base. The position is Daubach's to lose, but if Burkhart keeps impressing, Jimy is going to be forced to use him somewhere. From what the announcers on WEEI were saying Frank Castillo looked good in his first Spring Start (second appearnce) for the Sox and is the first starter of the spring to not allow five runs in the first inning. Castillo is probably going to be penciled in for the four or five spot in the rotation. Anything productive you get out of the #5 guy should be considerd bonus, as many teams struggle to go three deep (including the Sox) never mind five. So if Castillo can perform half as well as he did last year (in Toronto) for the Sox in 01, things will be looking good from that end of the spectrum. |
