Allow me to explain. Thru the first three innings Nomo costed, allowing no runs, it was the fourth inning where things started to fall apart. Now remember, these players are coming back from a six month layoff. It's quicker for hitters to get back into the groove than it is for the pitchers. Pitchers need to rebuild arm strength, hence the reason for only 2-3 inning starts to begin the spring training schedule. Today was a stretch day, as I call it, for Nomo. In order to build arm strength the pitchers need to pitch a little more each time out, until by the end of the spring then can go 7-9 innings. So basically what happened to Nomo today was that he ran out of gas in the fourth, and actually had two out before the gates opened on him. A couple runners and a bomb later, and all of a sudden his good day turned bad in the boxscore. So for the time he was still fresh, Nomo pitched very well. Obvioulsy 4 innings won't cut it at all come April 1, but for March 9th, it was very encouraging. As for the offense, it never got going. Some squandered opportunities, coupled with this being a split squad game, spelled for a good day for the Reds staff. |
