Bad, with some good

  • It always leaves a bad taste in my mouth when we lose to New York. Even if there were some good things that happened in the game, we still lost. We're hanging onto first by the skin of our teeth right now. This afternoon's game is a must, and Pedro is the man for the job.

David Cone: I guess we should be encouraged by his performance yesterday. Much better than last time out. His control was better and he was able to go five deep. He did get away with a coupe of mistakes though. A few times he put the ball where he shouldn't have and luckily got the pop out. He could very well have left the game giving up 5-6 runs instead of 3, but you have to look at the end result, and for Cone it was pretty decent yesterday.

Shea Hillenbrand: Bad night for Shea. First he gets thrown out at second, trying to tag up on a deep fly/throw home (not saying it was a bad decision, you need to be aggressive against Pettitte and it was early in the game) to end what could have been a bigger inning. Then later on he makes a costly error that opened the door for an unearned Y----- run and we never got back on track afterwards. Probably not as bad as I'm making it sound, but I'm never real encouraging after a loss.

Dante Bichette: He whines about playing time and now he's become Mr. inning killer. I have still yet to see him do anything productive with runners on base. I realize bitching about Bichette is kind of silly since I've been in favor of him over O'Leary for a few weeks now, but I'm beginning to wonder what's worse. O'Leary with halfhearted swings (getting pop-outs and whiffs) or Bichette taking another runner with him when he gets out?

    Manny Ramirez: Not human.

Tim Wakefield: Wasn't particularly sharp last night, but such is the life of a knuckle baller. In cool wet weather you can't expect that pitch to dance much.

HUGE GAME TODAY: Today is a must. In order to leave NY in first we have to win this one. Also if we want to go .500 for the road trip we need this win, and the Sox hitters have a tall order in that they're going to have to beat Mussina for the 3rd time this year to do it. But it's a no brainer as to who we want on the mound for a game like this, and I'm sure I don't have to mention his name (Dominican Dominator).

Line-Up: What I'd like to see today (1:05pm start):
    1. Offerman 2B   2. Valentin SS   3. Everett CF   4. Ramirez DH   5. Bichette LF   6. Nixon RF   7. Hillenbrand 3B   8. Daubach 1B   9. Varitek C
