Daemons Exorcised

  • Whether justified or not Pedro went out onto the mound last with something to prove. In his previous five starts vs the 'Evil Ones' the Sox were 0-5 (three of those losses going to Pedro). But in his defense his teammates scored a total of seven runs over the five game span. They didn't give him much more than was expected last night, but it was more than enough the way Pedro was on his game.

Pedro Martinez (8IP 4H 0R 0ER 1BB 13K W,7-1): In his last couple of interviews with the press you could tell he was sick of this whole NY thing. Sick of hearing about the Y-----s and he said as much himself. You knew he would have his 'A' game last night, it's usually a bad idea to tick off Pedro.

Where are the sticks? Still not much on the offensive front. Actually what I found amazing was that we managed to score three runs on only five hits. We all know too well the games we've scored less and hit much more.

Brian Daubach (1-3 2RBI 2B): Possibly showing signs of breaking out a little. After hitting his first homer since April 19 on Sunday (to tie the game), Brian also had the big hit of last night with his ground rule double (bounced into the bullpen) in the second that scored two. In his last two games Dauber is 3-7 R 3RBI 2B HR.

Carl Everett (1-3 RBI BB): Mussina continued to make him look silly a couple more times, but Carl did come thru when it counted. His only hit on the night pushed the lead to three with a RBI single in the third.

Manny Ramirez (0-4 R): Officially in a slump. He's 0 for his last 12 and 1 for his last 15. Not coincidentally, since Manny has slumped the offense has mustered very little.

Jose Offerman (1-4 R): Still an adventure at second base.

Derek Lowe (1IP 1H (cheapy) 0R 0ER 0BB 2K S): Looks to be back on track after the horrible April start. I believe I saw a stat that said he's now gone nine innings without surrendering a run. Consequently his ERA has dropped to 4.60.

Off to Toronto for four before a nine game homestead which features six interleague games. Three is obviously the goal of this series (four being wishful thinking), but I'll be happy with a split. Nomo tonight, if we can muster a few runs and if he pitches half as well as last time out, things will be looking good.
