Was that offense?

  • Sorry about the late updated, this is what I get for staying up until 3:30am last night. Anyway...

Anyone who has been suffering thru the weak offense this past week was yelling a big 'FINALLY' after last night's game. Considering we just about equaled our run total over the last 5-6 games in yesterday's affair alone, I'd say it's been a long time coming. I saw most of this one on ESPN's gamecast so I can't specifically comment on allot but I'm sure I'll find enough.

Hideo Nomo (5IP 4H 2R 2ER 2BB 5K 1HR): Thru five he looked real sharp, then a hit and a walk later in the sixth, Jimy wasn't going to take any chances. Rich Garces did a nice job of getting out of that jam relatively unscathed.

Bullpen (4IP 4H 3R 3ER BB 2K HR): Take out Arrojo's strong ninth and it looks even uglier. Garces got himself into a jam to start the seventh and then Beck came in and let up the bomb to Shannon Stewart and let up the lead for the time being. I hope the road stats of our pen (it was either Just_Once or TonyC who pointed it out on the message board) don't hold up too much longer. I don't have them with me, but suffice to say the road ERA of our pen is horrific for some of the staff.

Jason Varitek (2-4 R 3RBI HR): Really seems to be coming around at the plate and continues to do well when he's very low in the order. Hopefully Jimy will get the hint and keep him done there. Tek hit a big solo jack in the fifth and later had a big bases loaded single in the eight to break the game open.

Manny Ramirez (2-4 3R 2RBI HR ): The slump is over, hopefully. Not surprising to see Manny break out of it with a huge hit that would put us ahead in the game. Not to mention the hustle he showed scoring on a single in the ninth.

John Valentin (1-1 R 2RBI): Had to feel good for Val to get a big hit in the ninth (with 2-outs) to put the game away. Hopefully this game in general jump-started a few of these guys.

Troy O'Leary (1-4 R RBI 2B): Maybe it's wishful thinking, and I know his 2-out double in the ninth came at a pretty useless time, but maybe, just maybe, Troy can build off this.

UGH! I'm getting the feeling that this is a pretty lack luster update, probably because I'm rushing it due it being way past due. My bad.

Frank Castillo takes the hill for game two of the series, hopefully he'll look as sharp as last time out as well. No promises on the weekend updates, but if I can I will. I look forward to Monday at the very latest to talk about a 3 of 4 weekend.
