And breathe...

  • Whew! They had to make it interesting last night, but eventually got the win and salvaged the road trip. Going into this West Coast swing I had said that 3-3 would be acceptable and 3-3 is what we got. At times it got ugly but the end result kept us in a tie for first in the East.

  • Couple of side notes before I get into the game. If you visited the site over the weekend you'd have noticed that there were no updates. Unfortunately this may stay the case for the immediate future. Currently this is a one-man operation and I simply do not have the time on the weekend to keep up with the site. If there is someone out there (reliable someone) who would be willing to recap both the Friday and Saturday games for Saturday and Sunday's updates that would be great. But unless that happens I'll only be able to get it done sporadically through the season. Monday thru Friday (for Sunday thru Thursday games) will continue to be updated on a consistent basis. So for those of you who mostly visit while at work don't fret.

  • Second note, the weekly stats section will be updated for tomorrow. With no game tonight it will give me something to do.

  • First let me say something about Saturday's game and Paxton Crawford. What a clutch performance. After his last start against KC I wasn't too optimistic about him coming back strong against a much better team. But right when we needed it, right when we were on the verge of a four game skid and throwing the road trip down the drain, Crawford came up big. Easily his best performance of the season. If not by his actual play, then by the timing of the win.

Now yesterday. You could tell Pedro was not at his best, but when you're the best pitcher on the planet, even 80% is better than 95% of the league. Petey put in a solid seven-inning performance before handing it over to the bullpen to close it out.

It didn't exactly go as easily as planned as Rolando Arrojo allowed his first two runs of the season and allowed the A's to get back into the game. I don't question the decision to bring Arrojo in, he is our closer and Pedro was tired. But I knew in the back of my mind the A's for some reason seem to give him a hard go of it. I remember writing an article about it last year, you can find it in the column archives.

Maybe Jimy new this info as well (probably did) as he didn't allow Arrojo to let things get completely out of hand by summoning El Guapo to get the last batter in the eighth. In the end Rod Beck had to be called upon to close things out as Guapo started to let it get away by allowing a run himself in the ninth and close the lead to within in one. Beck got his two batters and sent the Sox home on a high note and a home series vs the Ms starting on Tuesday.

The big bats on the night belonged to Jose Offerman and Troy O'Leary, who both hit dingers in the Sox five-run fifth (3-Run and 2-Run respectively). From Offy the homer is few and far in-between but he does seem to be heating up again. Hopefully for Troy this will be a jump-start from him as his homer ended up being the difference in the game.
