On to bigger fish

  • We went into Tampa Bay for two and came out with two, which is what was supposed to happen. No good job, no pats on the back, what happened was supposed to. Now onto New York for a three game weekend series.

First, as far as the D-Rays series went, if Darren Oliver were still on the team I would say that Castillo pitched himself out of the rotation yesterday. But with nobody to come in to do the job except for Wakefield, Frank keeps his job by default. Taking Wakes out of the pen right now would not be a good idea. After he and Ugie (with Embree on the DL) there's really nobody to go to out there on a consistent basis. I can't see Castillo being all that successful out of the pen and Hermanson (due back this weekend possibly) can't just jump back into the starters role after so much time off.

Second, and my last point about the Tampa games, do the Rays have it out for the Sox or do they just plunk everyone after they hit a home run? Had Manny been hurt in any way, yesterday would have got very ugly IMHO.

  • Now, to those bigger fish. The series starts tonight with Pedro vs. Mussina and is probably our best bet at a win over the weekend. With the way we've been playing I just want to come out of this series with one win, which will have us leaving New York only four games behind before heading home to play Tampa and Baltimore for the next six.

Of course I want to win them all, but being realistic, it's doubtful the bats will just turn it on when they start facing some of the better pitching in the league. The key to tonight is to get to Mussina early and then stack em up for Pedro. You know the Y-----s are going to be taking allot of pitchers to try and get Pedro out of the game ASAP and into our less than stellar bullpen. So hopefully Pedro worked out all the rust from last week and will be on top of his game for tonight.

Arrojo goes tomorrow, and I believe Burkett will finish the series on Sunday, so tonight’s game is the most important and gives us the best chance to win. Games like tonight are what wins division crowns, what are we made of?
