Pitching and defense

  • That's what won the game last night, that and a little help from Mr Error on the Angels behalf. The bats certainly didn't do their part, and of course the frustrating thing was that it was against a guy we never heard of before. Yet again making a nobody look like Cy Young.

The staff was up to task though and it looks like Wakes is in the rotation for the foreseeable future. The only problem, and we saw it first hand last night, is that guys like Arrojo are now in the pen and simply do not want to have an easy inning. Anyone stay up and watch the whole thing? I could have strangled the guy.

Speaking of defense, holy Hillenbrand. If you didn't see it Shea basically saved the game when he dove and snared a shot off the bat of David Eckstein with two outs in the ninth and the tying run on second base. It looked like he tagged the runner coming from second but he threw to first anyway getting the runner by a step. It was one of those clutch plays that we very well could come back at the end of the year and say that was a difference maker.

  • Still waiting to find out who gets the axe when Cliff Floyd is activated tonight in Texas. I'm hoping it's Offerman, but I'm getting the feeling that Clark is going to get a DL stint to buy the team two weeks. Another roster move will have to accompany Floyd's arrival as the Sox got some pen help right at the deadline yesterday in the form of Bobby Howry from the Chi-Sox. Not bad I think, Howry is having a pretty good year, he's a former closer, and I'd definitely take him over some of the other riffraff we have out there. My guess is that Gomes or Banks get the axe, but who knows. We won't notice if either is gone.

  • Texas tonight with, I think, Burkett on the hill. This could be a brutal game in that the Ranger bats finally woke up last night against the Y-----s and slapped Mussina around to the tune of 17-6. With Burkett's style of pitching... lets just hope all goes well.
