Grady Little
3/12/02

  • By all indications I have been given, this was a god choice for the next manager, though we're also hearing the complaints as well. The players are very happy with the decision, and some have even had Little as a coach in the minors before (Nomar and Tek to name two). The naysayers, those that are out there, are some of the fans.

One example in particular I heard was on WEEI yesterday on my ride home. Someone called in and asked where all Little's experience was, and this caller didn't consider his 16 years in the minors experience. I'll have to completely disagree with that notion. Not only is minor league experience accepatable on a managers resume who is looking for a ML job, but 16 years of it is alot more than I'd need to base my decision.

Whether it's High School, College, or the Minors, it's still baseball. Granted the level of play is different, but the game stays the same and so do the situations. Your going to tell me that in 16 years in the minors Little hasn't seen just about every situation possible that come occur during a game? Add in the fact that he's had alot of succes with winning, means he's been in plenty of pressure filled games (postseason).

The fact that Little has never been a ML manager (save the 20 games he was interim for the Indians last year) makes him a Rookie by definition, but he's harldy anything close to resembling someone who's unseasoned.
