3/19/02 At the start of spring I would have said, hands down, that Baerga was a joke, and I couldn't beleive the Sox brought him into camp. I know it's Spring, but the way he's (Baerga) played and the shape he came into camp, it's going to be hard for Grady Little to turn him away. On the same note, Lou Merloni hasn't exactly played himself out of a spot, he's done nothing less than crush the ball all spring and is giving Little a very tough decision indeed. I say it's between Bearga and Merloni becasue I'm assuming Ray Sanchez is going to be the starting second baseman and that Jose Offerman will be the back-up. Even with Offerman's very good spring to this point, if it were my decison, I'd cut him and keep both Lou and Carlos. Ownership has said they are willing to eat a contract or two if circumstances dictate, but in the end (and unfortunately for a very deserving Baerga or Merloni) I think Jose's solid spring and eight million dollar contract will win a spot in the end. With Sanchez' natural position being short stop, Nomar is back-ed up, and Offy can step in for Sanchez at second base. Baerga, natural position at second, can also play some third, and Merloni can play around the diamond, so the decision of who stays and who goes, probably won't be due to lack of being able to play the field. So, IMHO, if it comes down to the lumber (and assuming Offy has a spot behind Sanchez) I think the kid from Framingham is the odd man out. All that said, one of our regulars over on the message board (krimmins) has devised a quiz based on the upcoming season. I invite everyone to head over to the message board, check it out, and submit your answers. We'll see at the end of the year who deserves the lable of Red Sox Guru. |
