Derek Lowe
3/21/02

  • So far this spring, yesterday being the most recent, Derek Lowe has looked very good. After his four innings of shut-out ball yesterday he lowered his spring ERA to 1.80. Meaningless would be the thing I would nomrmally say next, but with Lowe it's a bit different, not in that the 1.80 ERA means anything, it doesn't, but throwing this well right now, has to be a confidence boost for Lowe, something he definetly lacked last year.

He threw 66 pitches yesterday, then threw another 15 after he came out of the game. Right now the biggest obstacle is endurance, Lowe is trying to get his pitch-count to 90 before the season starts.

  • Another story coming out of camp is the great spring Rickey Henderson is having. The Globe article this morning suggests that we could see Rickey as the lead-off guy against lefties. I guess that means Henderson would be the DH in those situations, as Damon would definetly not ride the pine, nor do I think they would want to weaken the OF defense that much.

Still about a week or so to go, so there's still time, but so far, all things pointing to the positive this year.
