Big hits

  • For those of you who stayed up until the end last night, did anyone else have 1995 flashbacks when Scott Hattberg stepped to the plate as the potential winnining run in the bottom of the 9th? You know, Wild Card 1995, game one, extra innings, Tony Pena at the plate, WHAM! Home Run! Game over!

I guess I'm forever haunted by that fear whenever a former Sox player comes to the plate against his old mates. Luckily for us Hatty obliged with a whiff.

  • The boxscore doesn't reflect it but Pedro pitched well last night, his only bad mistake was to Eric Chavez, and if it weren't for some shaky D (Shea!), Chavez would never have batted in the inning. Of the seven Oakland hits, only two of them were hit hard, most were of the bloop variety, Oakland's hitters getting just enough of the ball to allow it to fall in between the infield and OF.

I was planning on bitching and moaning about how Pedro was getting squeezed last night. There were allot of non-strike calls I couldn't believe weren't getting called. But I have to admit it was consistant, the Sox hitters also benefited from a small zone last night, maybe more-so than Oakland.

  • So how big are two out hits? I was getting very frustrated when we failed to score with the bases juiced in the first and then later with men on 2nd and 3rd, both situations with two outs. Like I said yesterday, when scoring opportunities present themselves against the teams we're coming up against, we HAVE to score. Needless to say Trot came up with the biggest hit of the night with his 2-run single (with two outs) in the 8th inning.

Glad to see Trot have a couple of good nights. Not many have noticed that Trot really hasn't been pullig his weight yet this year. Tony Clark has been masking Trots less than stellar performance thus far, with an even worse showing at the plate to date.

Nomar had himslef a night as well busting out of the mini-slump he went into for the Tampa series, good to see. Oh, and who the heck was that pitcher who came in for Pedro in the 5th? Arrojo? Couldn't have been. This guys Jeckyle and Hide tenure with the Sox continues, this time for the good.

Guapo still can't pitch more than an inning at a time and it looks like Urbina is simply going to make our hearts race every time he's out there. As long as we get the W, I guess I'll live with it.

  • One more thing, was it me, or did it look Like Manny put in a little extra hustle last night? Maybe he hustles every night, but his body language speaks otherwise most of the time, maybe it's just me. Last night Manny seemd to be all over the place and even beat out a double paly ball at first base. Go Manny!

  • ESPN has Burkett listed for tonight, I'll take their word for it.
