Just imagine...

  • ...how good this team would be if we had the smallest semblence of a major league bullpen. We can't blame the pen for blowing yesterday's game, it was already tied when Wakefield left. But in true 2003 bullpen form, they took us out of the rest of the game as fast as possible.

You might argue that several of the runs the pen gave up were unearned, so the loss should actually be chalked up to shoddy defense. Sure I'll bye that, the pitchers should never been in those situations had the D made the plays. Fine, we'll take the pen off the hook for that one.

But explain to me why they get a free pass when an error is made? It's suddenly OK to give up a bunch of hits just because one of the baserunners shouldn't be there? I don't think so. If the gloves aren't going to do it for you, you do it yourself, but these guys aren't capable of that.

Friday night's game was a joke, to have the team fight all the way back, just to be blown out of the water an inning later. Luckily Pedro pitched a complete game on Saturday, because nobody can say whether or not the lead would have been preserved if he came out in the seventh.

This is the reason I can't get excited about this team, this pen simply cannot succede when it counts. Of course they aren't bad all the time, the laws of chance say that atleast once in a while the chips will fall in your favor. But come crunch time, come pennant drive, and dare we dream playoff time, we have no chance with the current pen.

Sorry if I've been more on the negative side so far this season, alot of teams would kill to be 20-11 at this point. But it's the simple truth, why have a good regular season if you're not going to back it up in the playoffs?
