Bush's Faith-Based Charities Initiative. The
massive 79-page document allegedly indicates
that the Bush Administration would do an end-run
around current anti-discrimination laws by issuing
"low-profile" regulations rather than legislation
that would draw media attention (and fire).
The Post maintains that the report says the
organization wants to make sure local and state
governments don't "impose the category of sexual
orientation to the list of anti-discrimination
protections" or force "equal benefits to domestic
partnership" without exemptions for religious
nonprofits. Matt Coles, director of the American
Civil Liberties Union's Lesbian & Gay Rights
Project protested: "Right-wing groups and the
White House continue purposefully trying to
blur the fact that religious groups are exempt
from gay-rights laws - unless they receive public
funds." HRC's David Smith concurred saying,
"We urge people to contact their member of Congress
and tell them that federal funds should not
be used by organizations that discriminate."
