SINEAD JOINS HECHE IN THE EX-GAY TREND

Barely a year after outing herself, Irish rebel Sinead O'Connor confounds everyone (and delights the "ex-gay" proponents) by announcing she'll marry journalist Nick Sommerland. Despite her previous avowal that "I love men but I prefer sex with women," O'Connor declares she's "fallen" for Sommerland.

O'Connor and Anne Heche both came out at the height of the "lesbian chic" trend, and seem to be leading the "ex-gay chic" trend. Whether they just jumped on the gay bandwagon to belong or whether they are struggling with identity the way many other GLBTs do, is between them and their therapists. Meanwhile, all this celebrity outing and inning is more grist for the right-wing mill. Maybe that Twelve-Step tradition of anonymity at the level of press, radio and films ain't such a bad idea!
