Miles Driven on June 22: 592
Lodging for June 22: Doug's Mellow Mountain Retreat, 3787 Forest, (530) 544-8065
This morning I had a relaxing breakfast at the Ute, and left at about 9:30 am. Most of my stops between SLC and Tahoe were brief--pictures of the Great Salt Lake and Bonneville Salt Flats, gas in Wells, NV. I should have had lunch at the Burger Bar in Wells, but I pressed on and instead had a scary torta at a deserted Mexican restaurant in Battle Mountain. I should clarify that I was in WEST Battle Mountain; every city off I-80 in Nevada seems to have three exits: East Nowheresville, Downtown Nowheresville, and West Nowheresville.
I made it to Reno at about 5:00 pm.--not bad considering I went 540 miles. I left Reno 10 minutes later--nothing to see here but big ugly casinos. Carson City looked nice. The capitol building looked very modern; I should have taken a picture.
Lake Tahoe is really beautiful. The town of South Lake Tahoe is okay. Doug's is an experience not to be missed or repeated. I'm paying $15 to sleep on a couch. The housekeeping is really lacking. At least I get free Internet access. And on the bright side, I met two girls from Köln, Germany who seem nice. My German has come in handy with them. Lots of girls here from Ireland, too, one from Central California, and one guy from Oregon too.
I made my own dinner for the first time in a while (mac and cheese), checked my email, suddenly got depressed thinking about the reality of my love life, and decided to escape by walking around town and doing a little gambling. Blew $20 at Harrah's casino and came back shortly to the hostel for a Sam Adams and some popcorn out on the patio with other hostellers. Tried to sleep but was interrupted occasionally by chiming clocks or a drunken/high owner mouthing off about sex.
