Miles Driven on June 23: 41
Lodging for June 23: Doug's Mellow Mountain Retreat, 3787 Forest, (530) 544-8065
This morning I initially set out to go kayaking on Lake Tahoe, but I couldn't justify spending $14 an hour. After my losses at Harrah's I didn't want to spend any more money in Tahoe for a while. I did go to Raley's supermarket and get a picnic "lunch box"--for $2.49 I got 1/2 a sandwich with lettuce and tomato, a cup of potato salad, chips, and a Jello cup. Pretty good deal in my opinion. Then I drove to the Eagle Falls Picnic area. Saved money by parking on the shoulder instead of the regular parking lot. Had my lunch on a rock near the falls. Crossed some trickling water by rocks--I'm getting better at doing that. I started to hike down to Emerald Bay but the trail was way to steep and rocky, and not well marked. I'm not even sure it was a real trail. I drove back to the Bayview trailhead area located in a campground and took the Cascades Trail. That was nice.
After my hike I went to the Tallac Historic Site, the site of a former resort area. Not much to see or do here. Not much beach and anyway the water is too cold to do anything. But it was peaceful and that was enough for the time being.
In the evening I went back to the hostel, where a man named Tony apologized for drinking all of my root beer; he was "totally hung over and couldn't wait." Argh. He made it up to me by offering me some of his homemade taquitos with guacamole sauce. Not bad. The rest of the evening I hung out in the TV room (also my bedroom) with the quieter bunch and watched "Frasier" and the movie "Wild Things".
