Havishya

The food which is used for offering Aahuti in Havan. All things cannot be used to offer Aahuti in Havan. Ghee, rice, sesame seeds, Moong, cows Ghee, milk and yogurt etc are called Havishya Ann (food). When it is prescribed to eat Havishya, it is only these Ann, which should be eaten. Agni Puraan, 19 says - "Rice, Saathee rice, Moong, peas, sesame seeds, barley, Tinnee rice, and wheat, Charu (Kheer), food gotten in alms, Sattoo, yogurt, Ghee, milk, Agahanee rice, barley Halavaa are considered Havishya - these can be used in Vrat, Nakt Vrat, and Agnihotra."

The following are ingredients that can be used in making Havishya, which is like a Khichadee made with these items.

Aatap rice
Unadulterated Ghee from cow
Saindhava salt (sea salt)
Milk from cow
Milk with cream
Ripe Banana
Kaala-Shaaka
Wheat
Fruits (Skanda Puraana, Naagar Khand says they must be with a small seed or with few seeds only)
Mango
Jackfruit
Labali fruit
Roots except kesa grass root
Pippalee (Peepal spice)
Hareetakee (Harad)
Naagarang
Ikshu-dravya or sugarcane derivatives (other than Gud or jaggery or molasses)
No oil in any form

The following ingredients though part of Havishya need to be avoided in the month of Kaartik:

Mung dal
Til oil
Beta-shaak
Shashtikaa-shaak
Radish
Jeeraa
Tamarind

Havishya - means fit for oblation - consists of things that are considered very pure and fit to be taken during certain period of fast. It consists of Non-boiled rice from white paddy, Moong Daal, barley (Jau or Yab), Til (sesame seeds), brown pea (Kerao), Oeree, Bathuaa and Sarhanchi Saag, Gamhari, Shataavaree, Aaru, Khamharu, Rock salt (black salt) , Sea salt (Sendhaa salt), Cow milk, Dahee, Ghee, Mango, Jack fruit (Kathal), Harir, Peepal, Jeera, Sonth (Dried Ginger powder), Dhaniyaa (Coriander), Ariconch, Tetari or Imalee (Tamarind), banana ripe and green, Harpha, Dhatri, Sugar, Crystal sugar (Mishri), Payas (Kheer) of cow's milk. Though wheat is not in the list, it is very much used in Havishya.
