Kalaa

(1) Art, including drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture and town-planning. Hindoo have a rich tradition in all of these arts They were perhaps the first in the world starting in 4000 BC to build towns which had perpendicular roads and a well-developed sewer system. All these contributed to the development of unique style of painting, sculpture and architecture which are not found anywhere else. Many dynasties throughout the history have contributed to the art.

(2) Portion. 1 Kalaa = 8 seconds. See also "Measurement of Time on Prithvi"

(3) Phases of Moon. Moon revolves around the Earth in 29+ days or say around 30 days. The first 15 days the Moon wanes away and on 15th day it completely disappears. In the next 15 days it starts appearing again and on the 15th day it appears in its full form. Moon has 16 Kalaa or phases and on each day its one Kalaa either decreases (in dark fortnight) or increases (in bright fortnight). Even on the New Moon day, it does not disappear completely for the whole night (although it is not visible to our naked eyes, but it is still there), it completely disappears only for a couple of hours. See also Amaavasyaa.
