Dear Steve,

Thank you very much for your message.  It was good to hear from you and, especially, to learn that members of our Aiglon community are safe and accounted for.  The horror and shock of last week's atrocity was felt in a powerful way here on campus.  Some 14 students had parents or close family members who worked in the WTC buildings or had regular business commitments there.  Thankfully, by late on Tuesday evening we had been able to account for all of them with only minor injuries sustained to one parent.  As the days have gone on we have learnt that colleagues and friends of our community members were not so fortunate.

Last Tuesday afternoon we held an emergency meditation so that all students could be informed of the details of what had happened and to re-assure those who were anxious and distressed.  Another period of silent prayer and meditation was held after prep and many students came along to spend a few moments in quiet thought, prayer and reflection.

We are now a  school with over 55 nationalities and 30 different languages.  Our students are drawn from all over the world and represent many cultures, religions and ethnic groups.  We are very proud of the community that we have here.  It is a remarkable community where young people live, learn and play together.  As always, we place a great emphasis on building good, strong relationships and in creating a place where young people can feel safe and free from fear.

I have spoken to the students on several occasions about the events of last week.  Our students learn here that we do not solve the problems of the world through conflict, or violence or revenge.   They learn that there is another path which involves understanding, tolerance and celebrating the differences in other human beings.  Our Christian, Jewish and Islamic students talk and discuss together.  In many other parts of the world they would be throwing stones at each other - or worse!  The relationships here are good and even though we are not perfect, we work hard to maintain a friendly, caring and constructive community.  I believe that if there is to be any hope for our world, it lies in the taking the path that we have chosen here.

The sheer magnitude of last week's appalling events will certainly change the world we live in.  I have recieved letters and faxes from many parents in many countries expressing fear and concern about the future.  All of them share the same anxiety but also the same hope - that Aiglon can continue, in some small way, to educate young people in a way that prepares them to make our world and better and safer place for all of us.

Do stay in touch Steve and please don't hesitate to contact me if there is anything that I can help with.

All good wishes and kind regards,

Jonathan
