DOCTOR (MEDICAL) SIMÃO DA CUNHA PEREIRA

Simão da Cunha Pereira (junior), Doctor in Medicine, was son of the Capitain of Militia Simão da Cunha Pereira (da Silveira) and of Ignez Lidora Rosa de Queirós [see: APM, Mapas de População, MP, Caixa 9, doc. 15, Serro, 1840].
He was born at Vila do Príncipe [Prince Town], MG, Brazil, about the year of 1822 (in the Census of Serro, MG, Brazil, 1838, he was 16 years old [see: APM, Mapas de População, MP, Caixa 9, doc. 15, Serro, 1840]).
Supposedly, he was baptized at the same Vila do Príncipe [Prince Town], MG, Brazil, about the year of 1822 (the baptism register was not found).
He died in the city of Serro, MG, Brazil, on 13th/Oct/1862 (the death register was not found) [see: SENNA, Nelson Coelho de, "Traços Biographicos de Serranos Illustres ...", RAPM, 1905, pg. 203; and also see: SILVEIRA, Victor, Minas Gerais em 1925].
He married with Júlia Cândida Ferreira Carneiro (born Vila do Príncipe [Prince Town], MG, Brazil, ±1828; died Serro, MG, Brazil, 4th/Apr/1899), daughter of the Commendatary José Ferreira Carneiro (Juca) and of Joaquina Cândida da Conceição (Pereira Guedes), at the city of Serro, MG, Brazil, on 4th/Apr/1853 [see: AEAD, Serro, cas. 1842/1853, fls. 94/94-verso].
He did the studies of "Primeiras Letras" [First Letters] and of "Humanidades" [Humanities], at Serro, MG, Brazil, in the period 1832-1835; and did the "secundários" [secondary] studies at the Colégio do Caraça [Caraça High School], at Santa Bárbara, MG, Brazil, in the period 1835-1838, where, in 1836, he received "elogios" [eulogies], in the final examinations at the midst of the year (month of June); he did "preparatórios" [preparatory] studies at Serro, MG, Brazil, in the period of 1838-1841; he did the "exames preparatórios" [preparatory examinations] and the course of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, in the period 1842-1847, where he received the title of "Doutor em Medicina" [Doctor in Medicine], having graduated on the 20th/Dec/1847.
His doctoral thesis, entitled "Poucas e Ligeiras Considerações sobre o Trabalho Respiratório no Homem" [Few and Quick Considerations about the Breathing Work in the Man] was presented and defended on the 3rd/Dec/1847, and of it there are specimens at the Biblioteca Nacional [National Library] and at the Academia Brasileira de Medicina [Brazilian Academy of Medicine], in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.
He was a "Irmão de Mesa" [Brother at Table] of the Irmandade do S.S. Sacramento [Brotherhood of the Most Holy Sacrament], of Serro, MG, Brazil, in the fiscal-year 1841/42 [see: AEAD, Serro, Irm. S.S. Sacramento, Eleições 1768/1870, fls. 88-verso/89/89-verso], as well in the fiscal-year 1846/1847 [see: AEAD, Serro, Irm. S.S. Sacramento, Eleições 1768/1870, fls. 96/96-verso].
He entered in the Irmandade de N. Sra. das Mercês e S. Benedito [Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy and Saint Benedict], of Serro, MG, Brazil, having signed his compromise, on the 1st/Nov/1961 [see: AEAD, Serro, Irm. N. Sra. das Mercês e S. Benedito, Matr. 1845/1866, fls. 64-verso].
He was considered as a great benefactor of the Casa de Caridade Santa Thereza [House of Charity Saint Terese], of Serro, MG, Brazil, in which Hall he had a picture, together with the Barão da Diamantina [Baron of Diamantina], Francisco José de Vasconcellos Lessa, and the Priest José Jacintho Nunes, that was destroyed by abandonement.
He practised Medicine, at Serro, MG, Brazil (1848-1862).
He exerted many public offices, at local, provincial and nacional levels: 2° Delegado de Polícia [2nd Police Officer] of Serro, MG, Brazil (1854); 4° Juiz de Paz Substituto [4th Substitute Judge of Peace] of Serro, MG, Brazil (1858); Vereador da Câmara Municipal [Alderman at the Municipal Council] of Serro, MG, Brazil (1858-1859); Deputado à Assembléia Legislativa Provincial [Provincial Legislative Assembly Deputy] of Minas Gerais in the12th legislature (1858-1859) and in the 13th legislature (1860-1861), having beeing the President of it in this last legislature; and Substitute Deputy (of Antônio Cândido da Cruz Machado, future Viscount of Serro Frio and Empire Lifetime Senator) to the General House of Deputies of the Empire of Brazil, in the 10th legislature (1857-1860).
He was awarded with the Imperial Ordem da Rosa [Imperial Order of the Rose], in the degree of Knight, by imperial decree of the 14th/Mar/1855 [see: AN, Decr. Honorif., Ordem da Rosa, Cx. 789, Pac. 4]. He was also made an Official of the same Ordem da Rosa [Order of the Rose], in a posterior date, ignored, following the testimony of his widow.
He always lived at Vila do Príncipe [Prince Town], MG, Brazil, which was elevated to city of Serro, MG, Brazil, on the 6th/Mar/1838, except in the periods in wich he was living at Colégio do Caraça [Caraça High School], at Santa Bárbara, MG, Brazil (1835-1838), and at the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (1842-1847), or when he was absent for the legislative sessions at Ouro Preto, MG, Brazil (1858, 1859, 1860 e 1861).
