Trip to Japan, 2003

Day 12, 2003/03/30

Another one of those early mornings - we meet at the hotel at 6:30 AM. Luggage is loaded, check-out is accomplished, and we head for the airport.

Security is still very tight, and since we had three minivans for transportation, all of us have to go through the vehicle check line. It's not terribly busy this morning, though, and we travel on to the unloading area in front of the terminal. There luggage is unloaded, and my daughter, who has come along, takes our guests on in to the terminal building while we three American teachers head for the parking garage.

By the time we get parked and into the terminal building, most of the Japanese folks are finished with check-in. We get the last of the checked bags over to security for the final sweep, and decide we need one last group picture. Daughter takes my camera and one other and begins to set up the shot; soon cameras are popping out of every bag. Eventually she ends up taking about 10 or 11 pictures, all on different cameras. These are all digital cameras, so we can see results immediately; all of them turn out good.

Down the stairs to Concourse A and the final security checkpoint: before they go through, our guests decide to do a bit more last-minute shopping. We cannot go past the security checkpoint, so we say our goodbyes and remind ourselves that we will see each other again in June, when we make the trip to Tokyo.

I am very excited about what we have done these past days. I am beginning to understand a bit more Japanese, and our guests have improved their English abilities remarkably. I have lots to do in the next couple of months: learning to speak more Japanese, getting the updates set up for our school's website, doing a "practice run" of the initial joint science project, BUGS, and trying to figure out what I am going to take (and how I will ever fit it into two suitcases!)

For now, I will close this log, calling it Part 1 of our year's partnership. Check back again in May for further updates as I prepare for my portion of the long trip.
