Set for Magic: the Gathering |
Welcome to the Verdict set home page! Verdict is the standalone set for the Verdict Block, featuring 286 all-new cards. It introduces two new keyworded mechanics, Unchain and Alternate, plus a rich counter theme.
Verdict has been designed for playing with Apprentice, since printing card stocks is just, like, expensive. Please give it a try - I'd be pleased to know anyone cared to enjoy all my hard work a little. :-) |

New Mechanics Unchain COST (At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay COST to unchain this card until your next turn) - When you unchain a card, if it has the Unchain ability, it becomes unchained, and remains this way until the beginning of your next turn. - Whenever a spell of effect would unchain a card that is already unchained, that spell or effect does nothing instead. - Whenever a spell of effect would unchain a card that doesn't have the Unchain ability, that spell or effect does nothing instead. - The Unchain mechanic may seem a tad tooo simple at first glance, and you may think that the cards using the mechanic could have gotten away with a simple upkeep ability. However, keywording it makes up for a LOT of tricks, but most of them are reserved for later in the block. For now, take a look at the card Skyscape Sleight, and see if you can figure out some way to abuse the mechanic! Alternate TYPE COST - Text (You may play this card as a TYPE with its alternate text for its alternate cost) - The word after "Alternate" on the card text indicates which spell type the card can be alternated to. - Whenever you play a spell for its alternate cost, it counts as playing a spell of the alternate type. For example, if there's a card in play that says "Players can't play sorceries", you can't play an instant card for its Alternate Sorcery cost. - If you play, for example, Undead's Uproar, a sorcery spell, for its Alternate Instant cost, despite the spell counting as an instant, the card itself will always be a Sorcery card. |
Verdict Block's Theme - Counters The Verdict Block's main theme are counters - not counterspells, just counters. So, you can expect all sorts of counter madness mechanically in the whole block - and it gets more exciting as the block goes on. To have a slight idea of how the theme works in each color, take a look at the cards Trove of Beliefs, Molecular Theft, Death Scientist, Materialism, and Magnifying Sentence, as well as the countless cards that use counters to perform general tricks in each color. |
