We travelled Highway 3 and did some sightseeing up the Welland Canal. This is the shipping route to bypass the Falls. There are two kinds of bridges. You can see near the stern of the ship, to the left, is a drawbridge that pivots on one end with a huge concrete counterbalance at the pivot end. | |

This is a lift bridge that rises on pulleys. It remains horizontal. | |

Mom doesn't like the idea of this, but we drove UNDER the canal at Thorold while a huge ship was going over us. We got to the Lock just in time to watch it pull in. | |
