Lock 7 - Welland Canal |
This ship is named the Atlantic Erie. It comes from Halifax, Nova Scotia. We watched it ease into the lock to make its first step down the system from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Lake Erie is about 350 feet higher up than Lake Ontario, and the only other way to get from one to the other is over the Falls. That's NOT an option!! Take a close look at the white decks of this huge vessel and notice where the row of windows sits. |
The ship is in place and the lock gates close behind it. The water begins to drain from this section... |
The ship has begun to lower, and you can see the Canadian flag on the stern. Remember where that is... Hee hee, it looks like Riley is pulling the ship down by its porthole! |
It only took a few minutes, and the ship is now low enough to step down to the next lock. See that Canadian flag? The deck we are seeing here with the staircase is the one with the windows from the original picture!! What an incredible marvel of engineering the Locks are!! |
