13-8963 Gibson 1942 F-5 mandolin, 97418, sunburst, exc, OH. Very few Gibson F-5s were ordered, or made, after the Lloyd Loar era -- actually, less and less were probably made with every passing year. The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in nearly every able-bodied male heading for military conscription leaving the Gibson plant with just a few workers (and fewer orders -- if generally accepted serial number lists are to be trusted Gibson made only 300 serialized instruments, total, in 1942).
Mandolin Brothers

That this mandolin even exists is remarkable. With its fat Gibson script logo, large fleur-de-lis headstock inlay, block pearl inlays, it stands alone as a shining beacon topped with the sovereign flag of Mandolinia. But good sounding? Don't ask - it's truly sublime. Yes, it has finish crazing and is missing the pickguard, but when you play it you may imagine that Sam Bush has just walked in your front door. (Hi, Sam). WAS $18553.
