Gibson F-5 (1929) |
83-0818 Gibson 1929 F-5 "Fern", sb, 87368, vg+, OH. A magnificent
sounding F-5 fern, played but not mistreated. The back is unremittingly mega-flamed in feathery, multi-dimensional
patterns in Cremona brown 'burst. The neck is heavily tiger-striped. Tuners are original gold engraved plate
which the last owner attempted to repair by gluing or soldering three of them, but they are very workable and
don't look bad.

This is a dot inlay (starting at 5th fret) mandolin. It is a post-Loar F-5 prewar, and is listed in The F-5
Journal (interestingly, the mandolin whose number precedes it was a block inlay). Top and back binding
are white-black-white, side binding just white. It has an old but replaced "The Gibson" tailpiece cover.
This is one of the finest sounding prewar F-5s which we have recently offered. It has several nearly
insignificant repaired top cracks, shows normal playing wear overall, has light finish checking. You also get
a hand written set list inside its original rectangular, somewhat worn, hard shell case, which includes such
great hits as "Ain't She Sweet," "April Showers" and "Beer Barrel Polka." **$ 23,661
