Sun MicroSystems was among the first UNIX vendors to popularize the concept of the Graphic User Interface on UNIX systems. Sun's involvement in this field pre-dates any consensus on the X Windows standard, and Sun's first standard for user interface in the graphic display arena was based upon Sun's Open Windows application interface, which was a predecessor to the X Windows standard.
The most obvious difference between OpenLook and Motif, from a user's perspective, is the rounded appearance of screen objects. Otherwise, both Motif and OpenLook support what is essentially the same set of widgets for construction of the user interface. Still, in the opinion of this author, most programmers might find the application programming interface of OpenLook slightly more cumbersome than Motif.
