Contra dancing originated in France and the British Isles.  It is made up of a number of figures which take up 64 beats of music, such as do-si-do, allemande left or right, ladies chain, etc.  Contra dances can be danced to old-time fiddle tunes or Celtic jigs and reels.

Although many figures are similar to those found in square dancing, contra dancing is very different.  More obviously, the dance is done in a long set with partner facing partner across the set, instead of square sets.  The contra dance caller teaches all dances ahead of time and helps beginners to become quickly incorporated into the dance.  In square dancing, lessons are usually required before the new dancer can join in with the experienced dancers.  The contra dance is also fairly predictable, allowing the caller to drop out during the dance, letting the dancers enjoy the band.  Be sure to check out the Dance Links for more information about dances in the area.
