The Gardner Farm at Salyersville, Kentucky
This shows the beautiful, crushed-rock drive leading up to the Gardner Farm. Ben Gardner and his wife decided not to pave the drive, in order to preserve the old-fashioned look of the place. In the distance is a private residence adjacent to the farm. I visited the Gardner Farm in February, 2001, accompanied by my friend and fellow historian, Jim Spencer.
This shows Ruth and Ben Gardner standing in front of their private residence. Ruth is the granddaugher of Frank A. Clarke, who for many years operated the Magoffin Institute, Salyersville's first high school. The Magoffin Institute was founded in 1908 by Reverend A. C. Harlowe, who subsequently moved to Prestonsburg and established the Prestonsburg Baptist Institute and the Prestonsburg Post. The Gardners are a delightful pair, and Jim and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with them. Ben took us on a tour of the Benjamin Gardner House, and when that was done, Ruth showed us her fine collection of oil paintings. She is quite an accomplished artist and has painted several pictures of the Gardner House.
