A drama for L.A. Opera
January 10, 2003 / By Diane Haithman, LA Times
Staff Writer Snafus, including a late
sub for Plácido Domingo, seemed to conspire against Saturday's
debut of 'Poetry & Passion,' but the show will go on.
Giving Those Callas Bootleg Tapes a Road Test
January 9, 2003 / By ANTHONY TOMMASINI, NY

The Spirit and the Body, Two Unwhole
December 17, 2002 / By Bernard Holland / New York Times music critic. CHICAGO, Dec. 15
Some operas, like cars, are not meant to run forever. We are wise
to keep them for their spare parts but otherwise to leave them
idle. Massenet's "Thaïs" creaks into the 21st century.
A major overhaul and modernization might grease its way, but John
Cox's earnest, straight-arrow production at the Lyric Opera of
Chicago on Saturday night reminded us that outdated theater is
rescued only by unforgettable music. Massenet's has its moments
like the deathless "Meditation" but not
enough of them. And oh, such terrible theater.

Lyric not taking any chances with lineup for '03-'04
season
December 9, 2002 / By John von Rhein / Chicago Tribune music critic. Having recently replaced
two worthy but lesser known operas with more popular fare on its
2003-04 season schedule, Lyric Opera has announced the remaining
works and the artists who will participate in that season, the
company's 49th, at the Civic Opera House. ...Here is the rest
of the [2003 - 2004 Lyric Opera] season, listed in order of presentation
