MOROCCO

THE IMPERIAL TOWNS

The journey

A TRIP TO MOROCCO

Marrakech : the berber capital of the south opposing to Fes, the cultural arab capital of the north. The imposing buildings of the Almohadi remained as witness of the splendor of the past: the Koutoubia, twin tower but more ancient than the Giralda in Siviglia, the Sadian Tombs, containing the mortal remains of many princes and sultans and the wonderful Medersa Ben Youssef, one of the most interesting Koranic schools in Morocco. The walk across the gaily coloured souks and "the city wall ", seen by coach at sunset, are unforgettable.Enjoy and "get lost" in the unique Jemea el Fna square. Day and night it?s full of strange people, musicians, water sellers acrobats;also little shops and restaurants. Here you could meet your "destiny"!

FES : the most ancient of the imperial towns, with the precious remains of the hispanic-arab civilization like the medersa el-Attarin and the Mosque el-Qaraouiyyin.The emotion felt strolling about the Andalusian District, or the Dantesque atmosphere breathed at the view of the tanners plunged in smelling coloured basins, has been something really unsurpassed.

MEKNES : got its greatest splendor during the reign of Moulay Ismail ( 1672-1727) that supplied himself with buildings materials, sacking the monuments of Volubilis and Marrakesch. The gates of the medina are incredible and we recommend to enter through the Bab Mansour, the most interesting in Morocco, with blue and green decorations and to go out through the Bab el Khèmis, decorated with black and green stones.
The visit to the Imperial Town is still more interesting, from the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail to the Dar el-Ma, the " Palace of Water " with its huge granaries and stables built with roman columns and arches.

RABAT : reached its greatest splendor at the arrival of the " Moriscos " in 1600. The small medina, surrounded by the Andalus and, towards the see, the Almohadi walls, is wonderful. Leaning against the walls, on a rock that overlooks the port, we can see one of the most evocative district in Morocco, the Kasba of Oudaia. Sitting here, drinking a mint tea, the time stops.

KASBA' S ROUTE

It's no possible to feel the soul of Morocco, without a trip to the south. There are no monuments or art masterpieces but the colours ,landscapes and that very special "desert atmosphere" are maybe unique in the world. Once overtaken the pass of Tizi n'Tichka,we reach Draa valley, whose riverside is covered with an enormous palm-groves dotted with ksour. It's impossible to pass through it and don't taste the dates offered by children.
When you think you have seen everything from Ouarzazate to Erfud, suddenly rech another amazing oasis with a picturesque kasba in an emerald green vegetation.
Once at home, you always remember the magic walk along the narrow and silent streets, where children and women hide at the stranger's arrival and the storks building their nests on the highest towers.
