Hi, welcome to the June 2000 Archive Page.

Millennium Camp
Friday night dull and wet
Bogged down vans and lots of sweat
Tents are pitched in falling rain
It must be a Scout camp again!
Yep, you guessed it we started the camp in the pouring rain, still most of the scouts gear stayed dry as leaders and helpers had pitched camp in the afternoon. This was the Greater Manchester North 2000 Jamboree held at Ashworth Valley over the weekend 26th to 29th of May. In all 680 Cubs, Scouts, Ventures and Leaders took part in a weekend camp to celebrate the Millennium.
We teamed up with 10th Norden and 9th St Vincent's as part of the Croal sub camp which also included Middleton, Chadderton and Farnworth. There were 34 cubs and scouts and 7 leaders on site. The cooking and eating took place in Marquees provided by Norden (Thanks it made life a lot easier!)
There were many activities for the young people to take part in, these varied from traditional scouting skill bases to museum trips and demonstrations of country crafts such as thatching and dry stone walling. There was plenty of time for fun, which most of the scouts used to take advantage of the wind to fly kites. Quite impressive to see so many kites in the air.
On the Saturday night there was a festival of light culminating in the construction of a huge symbolic candle on the bottom meadow. This was followed by a spectacular firework display.
On Sunday our sub camp had the off-site activities for the afternoon, some went to Burrs activity centre to get wet or go climbing or orienteering. I went with the party which visited the Manchester Science and Technology Museum.
Monday was a morning of fun challenges for the young people, all scouting skills and fun activities like how many scouts on a brick?. In the afternoon we held a closing ceremony before breaking camp and heading home tired, but happy with loads of good memories.
