Poem "That's My Dad"

Written by Mary Baker Springer January 1938

Ya' say the kinda little man
Whose hair is turning gray?
Whiskers that are shiny red,
Eyes and blue and gay?
Ya' say I can't imagine
The trouble that ya've had
Findin' out just the he is?
Why fellows. that's my dad.

Sure, I know you'va seen him lout a lotta times
Goin' off somewhere
Dogs stringin' 'way behind
All kinds of funny lookin'uns-
None what ya'd call bad
and without 'em it just nat'chly
Wouldn's look a bit like dad.
Yeah, I know he's the kind
What'd take off his shirt
And give it to soon ornery goy
Who'd only done him dirt,
Guess he's kinda easy goin',
But ya' know, my lad,
It he wasn't that a 'way
Why fellows. It just wouldn't be my dad .

Well, I do' no' what causes
His whiskers to be red.
Guess they're just an nat'chl
As the hair on top yer head.
Do' no' why 'tis he'd give
Some one every thing he had.
But without,such qual'ties and dog's
It just couldn't be my dad!
