During the time that he was Head Master of the [Thebarton] school [1879-1881], Richard Burnard lived in the cottage, now the pottery room of the West Croydon Annexe. He was a man of exemplary character, and a fine, if strict, teacher, who devoted his whole life to his calling. His other appointments were at Unley, Moonta Mines, Gawler and Flinders Street. The first child of the marriage of Richard and Alice Burnard, Stanley, was born in the cottage. The other two sons were both notable: Dr. Renfrey Burnard, who had a practice on the corner of Hayward Avenue and Henley Beach Road, was one of the co-founders of the Western Clinic; Dr. Alex Burnard was prominent in the musical world, both as a teacher and composer. Mr. R. T. Burnard, Headmaster of the Flinders-street Model school,
Adelaide, is about forty four years of age, and an old and valued public
servant. He has been in the Education Department of the colony for many
years, and during his career has held many important appointments. He
was given the charge of Flinders-street School, one of the leading city
educational establishments, in January 1895, when holding the post of
Headmaster of the Gawler ublic School. Previously he was at Unley and
Yorke's Peninsular [Moonta Mines]. He resided for some years at Aldinga
