Thebarton Primary School was opened by its
first headmaster Mr. Richard Thomas
Burnard.
Mr. Burnard and his sister Emily Burnard taught at the school, assisted by
Kate Nootnagel.
Among the 250 students who attended on the first day was Thomas Burnard
McCarthy, the nephew of Richard and Emily.
Richard Burnard left to take up a new appointment at Unley Public School.
Emily resigned to marry to another teacher, William West, who was later
Chief Inspector of Schools. |

There is little room for doubt that the
school was well conducted under such capable leadership. In its Report,
filed a year after the school opened, the Board of Advice, then only newly
set up, noted with some satisfaction:
"The Thebarton disctrict, the Board considers, is in a position to
fulfil the requirements of the Act, having a good school... and
sufficient accommadation to enable all the children in the neighbourhood
to receive a good eductaion."
