The Biliran Clarion Crowd

The Biliran Clarion was the first newspaper in the former subprovince of Biliran.  It provided the clarion call that eventually led to the conversion of Biliran into a separate, independent, regular province.

The name of the newspaper was proposed by writer Ben Granali.  Its editor in chief was Berting Bago, the provincial treasurer.

The maiden issue of the Clarion was dated August 15, 1986.  It was supposed to come out every two weeks.  But resource constraints on the part of the provincial government, which supported it, eventually limited the frequency of its publication.  About a dozen issues came out over the next three years.  The last issue in the webmaster’s collection was dated April 16, 1989.

There were people who thought the idea of a newspaper for Biliran would work and become viable.  In their own unique ways, they contributed to keep the Clarion up.  In several issues the newspaper, the following concerned citizens allowed themselves to be listed as members of the proposed Biliran Clarion Cooperative Venture, which did not prosper as hoped.
