Summer Night's Dream

There's a little river glistening in the night
Beneath a moon so bright a diamond pales
The grass is swaying softly in the wind
Night creatures singing in distant hills
Now, in twilight, when the world is hushed
And stars glitter, sequins on a midnight gown
And the night seems to hold her breath
Words unspoken, across the sky
Breathed from lips like a satin rush
Across mountains and oceans,
And distance unseen
A soft lingering whisper,
The nightingale speaks...
"I love you."

And now, in the dove-gray silence before dawn
I look at the sky and see your face
And all of heaven shines in your eyes
Like mountain dreams and cavern jewels
Skin so sweet, and lips, bound in a kiss
In the distance the wolves sing
As from long ago when dragons soared
My soul, given wings, flies to you
To wake beside you in the morning.

And now I know this love is real
And now I see my heart is true
Once in a thousand lifetimes
You and me
Together in the dawn, forever in the storm
As the sun bursts golden overhead
And the foxes watch from the dark green trees
This is true, this is real...
Could love ever be more perfect than this
What more could we ask for
In these days of forever
Where the nightingale whispers in the velvet dawn,
"I love you."

And then, with the twilight again, when days pass unnoticed,
We wake with the dawn and count stones at our feet
And under the fading stars we embrace.
When the path is worn and the sun sets again
When nightfall is no more illusion than you
Here the nightingale whispers in the dusk,
"I love you."

Remember when you took me to the woods,
Where trees breathed whispers
And the rivers sang a lullaby.
And there the sun glistened
On the water, and your hair,
And I saw Oberon in your face, or maybe Puck,
Robin Goodfellow of mischevious mirth.
Didn't we play fairies that day?
Shakespeare would have smiled.
And when the sun set once more
And the stars reached out from sleep
We found constellations while lying on the grass
And when you spoke I heard the nightingale say,
"I love you."

And so we continued, king and queen
Elvin and fae, glamor and spirit
Sprites in the wood, wild and free
Until the night came again
And the nightingale called once more,
"I love you."

Passion

If love is a demon, let it possess
If desire were touch, let it caress...
If I should spend a thousand years on end
I would fly a thousand miles
Just to see the world through your eyes.

Where dragons once roamed
Where the fox became human
Here is my fantasy
My castle in the clouds

In a darkness too deep,
In shadows too long
My world in your eyes
The night becomes dawn
And I sleep, forever,
In your arms.

Across the deepest chasms
Beyond the widest sky,
I will stop at nothing
Until you're by my side

If this is fate, let there be no twist
If this is dream, let me never wake

Where angels sleep
And wolves sing of night
Forever inside you
Is where my heart lies.

Shattered Mirror

I've walked for a thousand years
In the footsteps of my shadow
I've waited countless lives
To hold your moonlight in my hands
And now that I have found
My diamond in the rough
I can't go back, and I can't move on
Until I know where you will be.

Through hell and high rise water
And the twilight in between
Where my angels and my demons
Are not what they may seem
Just call and I'll come running
Just give me a sign
Just ask and I will answer
Your truth will make
My shattered mirror whole.

We're cut from the same stone
Different faces in this grain
You are the rough and I am smooth
But I could trade if you want me to.
I'm a beta wolf with tail hung low
You're an alpha with a bleeding eye
I lost a fight but won't give up
You'd never let me fall.

I cut myself to the bone
When I didn't think they'd see me
I locked myself away inside my head
It's funny but if you asked me
Why I feel this way
I just can't give an answer
I don't know what to say.

I thought I could be simple
My problems were trivial
I thought my ivory flesh was untouchable
But now I see the scars are fading
And my mind once torn is whole
In the moment that you said you'd never leave.

You've given me my hope back
My lifeline is your trust
This love inside me feels as strong as you
You realize I would die for you
I'd fight to keep you mine
I'd give you all the blood in my veins
If it meant you would breathe my life.

Through hell and high rise water
And the twilight in between
Where my angels and my demons
Are not what they may seem
Just call and I'll come running
Just give me a sign
Just ask and I will answer
Your truth will always make
My shattered mirror whole.

My Best Friend

In my life there has never been
A true sense of completion
Over the years my mind has seen
Dreams half come to their fruition

I don't suppose it's too much to ask
Could the universe give me a second chance
If fate exists could she lend me her power
Just this once, just until things get better

Because in the end time and space don't mean a thing
Because in the end it's you I'll be waiting for
Please don't hurt for me, just hold on for me
You're my lover, you're my dream
You've always been my best friend

In my life I have only seen
Confusion, temptation
Like drama on a movie screen
I guess you've never complained
Between you and me it's stayed the same
We've both broken our wings
And we've both learned to fly
We can make our way through this
Just give it some time

Emotions run too strong to control
I don't think I ever really wanted to
Anyway
But beyond this touch, and beyond this kiss
Something deeper inside of you I can't miss

Because in the end time and space don't mean a thing
Because in the end it's you I'll be waiting for
Please don't hurt for me, just hold on for me
You're my lover, you're my dream
You've always been my best friend

I don't suppose it's too much to ask
Could the universe give me a second chance
If fate exists could she lend me her power
Just this once, just until things get better

Because in the end time and space don't mean a thing
Because in the end it's you I'll be waiting for
Please don't hurt for me, just hold on for me
You're my lover, you're my dream
You've always been my best friend.

Draw Down The Moon

There's a castle by the sea
Where the ghosts roam in all their loneliness
And in the sky beyond the window
There's a comet trailing purple fire
The mirror's cracked but not quite broken
Obsidian glass and golden frame
The staircase creaks when no one's footsteps
Make the climb
And the heavens grow so quiet when
I draw down the moon for you.

It's a ritualistic painting
Oil sweeps and sunset sky
You sat in the studio for hours
Arcing the brush down canvas wall
I am the sorceress who's painted
Arms stretched up toward the stars
And the twilight through your window
Is so strong and bright because I said
I'd draw down the moon for you.

I'm lying awake here in my bed
The pillow vacant beside me
There's no warmth for my body to behold
But the moon shares all her secrets with me
She knows just where to find you
I turn around and imagine
I feel you here

It's a ritualistic understanding
The secrets in her pale winter face
The universe has unleashed
The ultimate conspiracy
Then again I'm not complaining
I've got all the time in the world
We have all the time we need
To go and bend eternity
Provided you would wait
Until the witching hour
While I go and draw down the moon for you.

Everything To Me

I saw the tracks of angels in the earth
I saw your footprints alongside
And although I try to avoid debate
Maybe you're one and the same.

In the end, you could be my answer
My angel in the dark
In the end you could be my lover and friend
But whatever you are, and whatever you may be
Just understand that you're everything to me.

I saw the eyes of demons in the sky
I saw your face alongside
And although I see no evil or good
Maybe you're one and the same.

In the end you could be my answer
My angel in the dark
In the end you could be my lover and my friend
But whatever you are, and whatever may be
Just understand that you're everything to me.

I saw the worlds of prophets in my dream
I saw the brilliance that was you
And when I reached out to take your hand
I saw we were all one and the same.

In the end you could be my answer
My angel in the dark
In the end you could be my lover and my friend
But whatever you are, and whatever may be
Just understand that you're everything to me.

Story of Us

On a beach somewhere close by
There are waves that sing a ballad of you
Long ago, when the sea was deeper
And the sky was wider
And the beasts in the woods came out because of you.
Last time, you were a prince and a romantic rogue
And you never liked following rules.
At some point I was a vampire,
Waiting for temptation, waiting for my moment.
Even then you were an angel and a demon
Not so much innocent as cunning like a fox.
See the halo? you used to say, The one being held up by my horns.
That's okay. I have it too.
Because long ago I was a princess
But I was never what nobility expected.
How can you berate yourself the way you do,
Like you've lost all your dreams in this drowning sea
Of a new and blinding world.
You say I'm the only part of your world that's gone right,
But I know that's not true.
It doesn't matter anyway.
How can you admit the world is falling down
When, long after the fact, you're standing in the rubble
And a new world has been built?
How can you believe that the only thing that's real is me
When I'm so far from myself I have to shout to hear my own whisper?
On a beach somewhere close by,
There are waves that sing a ballad of you
Long ago and far away, and even now,
Listen to my voice, and I will always bring you home.

Deep Inside

If I could run a thousand miles
Drag my hands through endless desert sands
If I could tear the sky in two by thought alone
I could be the yin to this yang
And let you inside, deep inside.
A hundred days, a thousand years
A million words to speak one thought
So many doors to echo down one hall
Take your chance to play my game
And let me inside
Deep inside.

And here we feel the thunder above the gray horizon
And here we see the lightning strike in shadow
But if a thousand years could start with now
Let me inside, deep inside.
A downward spiral painted red
That stains our skin like blood
We lay still together
Inside the storm
Open like vellum, pale and soft
It's been a thousand lives since I saw you.

In a thousand years, if I see you again
A thousand dreams ago
Will you take me to the depths of space
Will you let me inside
Let me inside.
If in these days we're forced to fight
If for a thousand years you hold me tight
A thousand dreams ago we both took flight
Deep inside, deep inside.

If I could run a thousand miles
Drag my hands through endless desert sands
If I could tear the sky in two by thought alone
If I could be the yin to this yang
Half for you and half for me
If only I could
You know that I would
Let you inside
Deep inside.

Lovesong

When silence is the gray of dawn
And the sky is held with silken threads
When legends touch the eyes
When wonders kiss the heart
Then you know
Then you know
It's forever, so together,
Like a song, like a soul,
And you know you'll be together
Until forever, together.

Trials and time
Like a one-winged dove,
Broken back and nowhere to fly
When you can take a life
Take it by the hand
Lead it down the path of heart
So you know
Then you know
It's forever, you were meant
You were meant to be forever,
Like two doves in the starlight
Forever and together.

And when the sun is through the green
In your eyes, like a birth
And the warmth, like the water
Like the mother, like the lover
And the myth and the legend,
So eternal, all forever
And you know
Now you know
You were meant to be together
Meant to be forever
Like a starlit night, a lover
You know you are forever
Like a song that time remembers
Together, you are forever
Like a lovesong, forever.

Love Letters
(written with Adam Paul)

Across the heavens
And out into infinity
I found you there waiting for me
In the dark.

You were covered in stars
And made of dreams
And you took me to the places
That the angels
Fear to tread.

You took me by the heart
And threw me in a kiss
Deep and chuckberry red
Leaving me cold and shaking
With glistening sweat.

***
Under the moonrise
When stars were falling,
When dreams were spun by angels
I found you.

Alone in a blue-washed shadow
Your eyes reflections of eternity
Shards of mirror glass across your soul
You took my hand
You took my heart.

Met by moonlight with a kiss
A drowning sea and siren's call
From darkness breeds light
From fear we breathe redemption.

Bound in sweat and silver, we breathe love
Washed on the shores of our skins.

***
Waves come crashing
As if thrown by hurricane winds
Emotions terrified by
Genies and dins.

Heat like that of the sun
Building and feeding, rushing in
Explosions of technicolor blues and reds
Clouds gather and darken.

The heavens scream as if in hell
Lighting strikes and burns the back
Blood, rich and sweet,
Pools deep in the curves
Of our lives.

***
There is fiction in our fact
A folktale from days of old
There are demons living our lives
Castles in clouds yet to be built.

Across a blue moon landscape
Under the evening sky
Blue for north, home the north star
A rolling thunder of red-gold flame
Emotions too strong to contain
Fear too deep to know.

Earth opens under our feet
Heaven opens under our thoughts
And hell is other heavens
Without the world of you and me.

***
Down below
Deep underneath
It's all feeding on me
The current drags me down
Under the pale deep water
Of your eyes.

Trapped by the loneliness
That you feel
I'm brought to my knees.

Somewhere in the distance
You hear my voice
Calling out to you
And searching
For the place
Where you left your heart.

It's never quite as easy
As just believing
Sometimes you just
Need to make sure it's real
And not just the imagination
That you're feeling.

Some we never know
But I'm not going
To be letting you go
I'm planning to make
You know
Just who we are
And how far we can travel
Together.

***
Sometimes I find myself
Lost inside someone I thought was me
Sometimes I see myself
Drowning in the waters of you
And forgetting how to breathe.

Deep within the hollow cavern of me
I search for the light at the end of you
Drawn to your eyes and trapped by your voice
In the distance you call and I run
But this time I don't run away.

And that frantic beating of two hearts I hear
Is the thing we call a challenge of fate
And as I search for you I seek myself
The place where I left my heart
At the bottom of a turbulent sea
As I hold onto you I face the storm.

Don't let me go, and I will never leave
Show me how I see myself
And I will show you everything
That you make me be.

***
Okay
You win
But do not let it be said
That I did not try
That I quit too soon.

But let be
Yes let it be said that
In all this and more I love you
For who else in this world
Will challenge my mind
My heart
And my soul.

I can think of none but you
Thank you for all that you are
The way you inspire me to do things
I'd rather not have done on my own.
With love, Adam.

***
If I win
Let me take you as a prize
But don't let it be said
I will not try
Or ever quit.

If these are mere words
Don't think of them as words
But roses scattered on a cotton bed
Sunlight streaming
Lovers dreaming
Wrapped together in our warmth
Imagination.

Inspiration is the name I call you
In my dreams, and fantasy
Is the world I'm in when I see you.
In all this and more I love you
In all my nights of poetry I love you
You are the challenge for my heart
The challenge for my soul.

Thank you for giving me
The courage to be me
The world to open me
The power to do the things
I never thought I ever could.
With love, Joanna.
