(Arthur A. Dixon "Sir Launcelot
and the Queen Talked Sadly Together" from Doris Ashley's King
Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table)
The Rose of Guinevere
by Ladien
She wept silently in her chamber
Scent of roses in the air
She held a white one and a red one
And both were just as fair
The white one, given by her husband
A noble and generous king.
Symbolizing the pure and holy love
That he always promised he'd bring.
The red one, given by a courageous knight
Who was at very least surprising
A passionate and daring man
Whose kiss was tantalizing
She knew that she must choose
And for her country she must stand
And now standing in her chamber
She stares at the roses in her hand
She breathes in their scent one last time
And lays the red rose down on the bed.
And places the white rose in her hair
Choosing the man that she has wed.
And though her love of the knight may remain
His kiss she will keep on her own
As she makes her way down the vast hallway
To take her place on the throne.
