Mystery of the Trinity

Infinite in every Perfection

A person once said to me: the concept of the Trinity is illogical.  It makes no sense at all for GOD to be 3 Persons in One.  I said: On the contrary, the concept of the Trinity is completely logical if we understand the perfect Love of GOD.  Matter of fact, GOD cannot be anything less than a Trinity for Him to be completely SELFLESS.

Consider this: if GOD were merely One Person, how could He be totally SELFLESS?  For whom could He have created Creation if not for Himself since there was no other?  In that case, Lucifer's accusation that GOD is selfish and does all things only for Himself, would have been justified.  But the Trinity proves that this is not the case.

Remember the FIRST rule of Christianity: the SELF must die.  The SELF must be non-existent.  Then Jesus said to His Disciples: “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his Cross daily, and follow Me.”  Matthew 16:24.

What kind of relationship do the Persons of the Trinity have to one another?  Since GOD is completely selfless, nothing is ever done for the SELF at any time.  GOD the Father does nothing for Himself, everything He does is for the Son, and the Son does nothing for Himself, but everything He does is for the Father.

This relationship is completely SELFLESS.  But this does not explain why GOD is a Trinity?  GOD could have been a DUALITY and still been completely SELFLESS.  So why is GOD a Trinity?  Why have a third party, a third Person?  

The answer is because GOD the Father wished to extend His Love beyond His Son.  The Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son, behaves in the same manner as the Father and the Son.  He does nothing for Himself, but everything He does is for the Father and the Son.  Note what Jesus said: the Holy Spirit would be a WITNESS for Him.  (John 16:13-14).  This is exactly what we have to be also, witnesses for Christ.  “And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”  John 15:27.

So the Trinity is a model of perfect SELFLESS Love, in which each Person cares nothing for Himself but devotes His entire existence to the other.  Indeed, Love is not true Love unless it is completely SELFLESS.  The Trinity is a model of how we should Love GOD, and how we should also Love one another.  It is not just ourselves and GOD (a duality) but ourselves, GOD, and our fellow man, a triangle of selfless Love which includes all who believe in Christ. 

Now we can understand that GOD in 3 Persons makes perfect sense.  The Trinity is the model of the true nature of Love.
