Immigrants from Russia, hopeful for a better life
formed Russian Mutual Aids Society of America at the turn of the century; (abbreviated as
P.O.O.B.A. in Russian). This organization, headed by an elected Board of Directors, was to
act for the benefit of it's members as a financial and social institution. Organized into
branches primarily in New York and Philadelphia, ROVA offered insurance policies,
financial assistance for the disabled, low-cost mortgages and shelters for the homeless
and aged. It also organized many social and sporting events throughout the year.
Membership grew quickly, attracting people from a wide spectrum of ethnic and professional
backgrounds including scientists and artists, blue collar workers, even an inventor of the
helicopter, Igor Sikorsky.
Eager to bring NY and Philadelphia branches closer
together, ROVA purchased land in 1934 where restaurant now stands. A Hotel, Restaurant and Retirement Pushkin Home were constructed and a
"Russian Town" soon became a favorite retreat for those seeking to escape busy
city life. Bungalows were constructed by the branches and members purchased parcels of
land adjoining the resort. Children attempted summer camp, learning Russian language,
poetry and history. Youth played baseball and basketball (which were the latest rage) and
all gathered at the many festive picnics, concerts and dances held throughout the year.
Under the cool summer nights, music, singing and laughter filtered through the quiet
stands of pine; people enjoying the simple pleasures of family, friends and country
living.
Following World War 2, St Mary's Parish was built and
located one mile north of the Restaurant. This church unique for it's beautiful
Byzantine-style chapel is encircled by a Russian cemetery. St.
Vladimir's Memorial Russian Orthodox Church, with it's beautiful iconostas and golden
cupolas was built as a memorial to Prince Vladimir of Kiev, who introduced Christianity to
the Slavic People in 988 A.D. On the last Sunday of July parishioners from all over the
world gather to celebrate the year's largest religious festival, St.
Vladimir's Day.
In the spirit of brotherhood and friendship, which are the founding principals of ROVA, we
humbly welcome you to ROVA Restaurant. We hope you enjoy your visit and look forward to
seeing you soon :-)
