RP Guide

Hello, this is an RP guide. There are several sections. The first one is the division of the three major types of RP styles. Most people only say there are one or two, but I have divided it into three. Then there are some basic role playing tips and character creation tips and finally the "Fancy" or WolfSpeak Dictionary. If you have topics to add or want to write an article for the guild, feel free to and add it to the message board, and I will add it, crediting the article to you.

RP Styles

In my years of role playing I have seen three major types. will try to be fair in my description of all of them, but some bias will show through and I apologize. I will give a small sample of each kind, this samples are VERY small, I just want to give you a small taste and allow you to choose. The example is the same thing translated into each style.

Symbolistic: This style is usually used be newbies, but can be turned into an art form of its own. In this style actions are divided from the speech by some kind of symbol, the most common being asterisks. Speech may or may not be in quotations.
An example: *Looks around* Hello I am Rose. *smiles*
Fairly simple and straight forward huh?

Novelistic: This is my personal favorite, because it reads like a book and is easy to understand by all. Most of the time it is in third person past tense. This kind of RPing can improve your grammar. Imagine your favorite book, more than likely this style is similar.
An example: The young wolf looks around. "Hello, I am Rose." Her muzzle parts in the canine equivalent of a smile.

WolfSpeak: Often considered Fancy' or 'Advanced' however by those who do not like it they often call WolfSpeakers, 'Thesaurus Thumpers' because often they use a thesaurus to find a different word/ WolfSpeak is described as being visually appealing and in a way can be described as 'Actions with an Accent' Its not too bad, unless the Role Player get out of hand with the apostrophes, synonyms, and foreign words. The term WolfSpeak comes from the fact that wolf role plays were among the first to use this style and wolf role players tend to use it the most.
An Example: Lupine femina's crystalline orbs glance 'bout terra. "Greetings, I be dubbed Rose." Smirk played 'pon orifice

Use which one you like best, and if none of them suit you, create your own or perhaps use elements of each. Just experiment and choose to use the style you feel most comfortable with. Although Novelistic is my favorite kind, occasionally I will throw in a WolfSpeak word now and then.

Basic RPing

Do not powerplay or godmode. If you powerplay or godmode, then it takes out some of the enjoyment. you don't know what powerplay is, it is taking control of another character. Godmode is when a character is god-like, for example, he or she dodges all attacks.
An example of what not to do: The black steed rears up, his eyes burning with hatred for the creatures of light. He snakes his head towards the other's neck, teeth tearing a chunk of flesh out. Blood flows everywhere, its a major wound.
First of all the other can't decide to dodge or block, and second of all it says the degree of seriousness.

Don't make a perfect character. This is so annoying, if you read Harry Potter, think of Lockheart. Very irritating right? Perfect characters, that are 'loved by all' are so over rated and also despised. Give your character flaws

Do not mind read. If someone posts their characters thoughts, don't have your character know what ever the other is thinking. This makes coming up with plots very hard since the mind reader can ruin them easily.

Please have about a paragraph post, this gives the other role players things to play off of. Also avoid one liners at all cost.

Another thing, check your spelling and grammar, it makes reading posts easier.

Character Creation

OK the first thing to role playing is to create a character, and the more interesting the character the more fun you will have RPing with the character. Sometime for a laugh use the Generators to  either create a character or to use as a base for your character, characters generated by the generators will be quite unique. Please avoid clichés.

A major thing is the name, it is the first thing people see about your character so choose something appropriate.

Species, this normally is up to personal preference, however if the game allows only certain species. If the species list is limited choose a species allowed in the game. If not and you want an interesting character try a species that is less popular. If you are allowed to play any species and you want something special create a species.

Choose an age that you want, sometimes a young character makes it more interesting because then you can role play all life stages, however so can an older character because they are not common and are often considered wise.

Gender, this appears straight forward but is it? Perhaps you could have a gender shifter or a character that is neither male or female (or maybe even both). The most common gender is female because most role players are female and tend to play that gender.

When choosing your characters appearance consider what is most common in the game the character is for and then, choose the least popular traits! This makes your character more unique and will make him/her more interesting. Perhaps you could add some kind of distinguished marking?

Create a personality that you will enjoy role playing however avoid cliché personality types. Add quirks, fears and interests to make a well rounded character. While doing this, consider what is most common in this game and then choose something different.

Often the history is optional but it can add several dimensions to your character. Avoid the cliché  histories such as bad life or easy life. Or if you want to use them add a unique spin.

Other things are to consider is what class is your character going to be? (Noble, Upper, Middle, Lower, Outcast, ect) What job will you character do? Her/His likes and fears? Also consider over all does the character appeal to you, do you think you could enjoy playing this character?
