What have the other universities been up to this season?

23/11/99

So far, the only real showing from most of the universities has been the Four's Head.  As was to be expected, Isis and Goldie dominated the head of the field, with UL finishing 15th in their quad.  A Brookes composite reached 11th spot but their first full university boat only managed 23rd.  Reading were the first of the smaller universities to hit it big, with a quad in 36th place.  Surprisingly, the next boat in was Trinity College Oxford, all the way back in 107th place.

Edinburgh University men were next in line, finishing their boats in 125th, 151st and 241st.  Southampton put in a respectable performance, bringing in their top coxless 4 in in 137th place, some 15 seconds clear of Reading's first senior III boat (161st).  Bath could only manage 190th, fighting their way up from the new starters in their SIII boat.  They were followed by the senior III crews of Salford (207), Southampton (210), York (219) and Leicester (220).

On the women's front, Imperial and UL both teamed up with their club extensions, Queens Tower and UL Tyrian respectivley, to take the top university results.  Cambridge and Edinburgh were next in line, with 344, 347 and 348 (Cambridge again).  Reading put in a respectible performance to come in 365th, 6 seconds clear of Oxford Brookes, who were closely followed by UL and Oxford.

Cardiff, Southampton and York took the lesser SIII slots behind the big names, finishing 439, 443 and 444 respectivley.

25/11/99

Bristol opened their account well at Kingston Small Boats Head, taking the men's S1 4- in both divisions, as well as the men's S2 4+ and womens's S2 & S3 4+ events although, to be fair, the women's S3 boat was not up against any real opposition.  Southampton novices also made their mark, taking both the men's and women's novice events.

6/12/99

Glasgow have shown well against Edinburgh at the Ladbroke Riverboat Casino Fours Head.  They came in clear of Edinburgh in all the categories they entered, in both the men's and women's events.

Down south, Wallingford Head produced the interesting results, with Nottingham University and Oriel College Oxford taking the honours.   Nottingham won the S2, S3 and S4 categories, their S4 crew beating Bristol by 5 seconds.  Imperial College took the Novice trophy, 13 seconds clear of Reading University's first eight.  The other universities came in thick and fast, with 6 crews, headed by Bath and Souhampton, within 15 seconds of Reading.

Osiris, the Oxford University Women, took the women's title in style, seven seconds clear of their lightwieght stablemates.  Almost a minute back, the chasing pack consited of Nottingham, Bristol, Royal Hollaway, Reading and the second boats of the Oxford crews.  Even at the other end of the scale, Oxford kept it up, with their colleges taking the women's novice slot.

In the small boats it was a different story.   Reading University took the fours title easily, comfortably ahead of Nottingham and Isis.  Trinity Oxford took the novice men's title.  The divisional winners for the women's fours were (from S1) Osiris, Reading, Nottingham, Oxford Lightweights and Southampton.

7/12/99

Up north, the major universities have been fighting it out at York and Rutherford.  York Small Boats Head was dominated by Durham men, who took the E4-, S1 4+ and S3 4+ categories with ease.  They were also the fastest novice university crew but were well behind the school crews.  Loughborough were the fastest S2 boat, closeley followed by Sheffield.  Newcastle were well down the running behind these crews and York picked up the S4 title 3 places later.

Newcastle were the fastest women, bringing in their S2 4+ ahead of Durham's elite quad.  Sheffield University took women's S4.

Rutherford Head brought a few more surprises.   Durham won the battle with Newcastle in the coxless fours but both boats were very slow.  They also beat Newcastle to record the fastest 4's time, with Edinburgh in third.  A minute back, Teeside brought in their S3 boat and Newcastle took novice ahead of Durham.

Women's Eights saw Edinburgh go top, over a minute clear of Newcastle, closeley followed by Leeds.  Durham were well out of the race, a further 50 seconds down.  Newcastle took the women's novices, ahead of Edinburgh and Leeds.  Edinburgh also took the women's fours, beating Durham, Newcastle and Sunderland.

9/12/99

Looking back through the recent races, we come across Marlow Fours and Pairs Head on the 28th of November.  Oxford Brookes took 5 of the first 6 places and 10 of the top 20 places.  Nottingham were completely outclassed, finishing 15th, 18th, 21st and 22nd.  Nottingham did take the novice fours in style though, finishing in 43th place.  Women's fours went to Brookes as well, with OULRC in hot pursuit.  Southampton women had to settle for second in their races, behind Oxford Lightweights in both S3 and Novice.

24/1/00

Bristol University Head.  I'm not sure why, but Bristol University recorded the fastest time although it is recorded as time only.   However, they were a clear ten seconds ahead of SII winners Exeter, closely followed by Cardiff, Bath (SIII) and Exeter (SIII).  Oxford Brookes usually dominate this event but the best they could manage was  their SIII boat in sixth place, with their SII crew in seventh.  Hertford College won Novice eights, well ahead of Brookes.  Bristol dominated the men's fours events as well, winning SII 4+ and SII 4-.  Bath took S4 as the 4th fastest four, with Exeter taking Novice.

On the women's side, Bristol took SII and SIII in very reasonable times, well clear of Brookes.  Warwick women took the novice category, again, well clear of any opposition.  In the fours, Bath took the WS4 category, ahead of Cardiff and Exeter.

25/1/00

Just an update on the Cambride Colleges Fairbarn Cup.   Emmanuel had the best overall results, winning the women's first boats and coming 2nd in the men's firsts and 3rd in the seconds.  Jesus also had good results, with 2nd and 1st in the two women's categories and 1st in the men's seconds.  Darwin took the women't third place (along with 2nd in the second boats) and Caius took 1st and 2nd in the men's categories.  If that lot didn't confuse you, I'm impressed.

7/2/00

Lots of racing been happening this weekend.   Henley 4's and 8's head was a chance for Oxford Brookes to show off, winning a total of eight events, including all the top men's events.  Reading University won Men's quads with Cardiff showing ahead of Southampton in the men's coxless fours.   Novice fours was won by Trinity College Oxford.  Reading University took the fastest University fours in the Women's categories, with third in SII and a win in novice.

In the second division, Cardiff were the fastest non-Brookes University, with their SI coxless in 9th position.  Reading and Exeter followed up in their Coxed fours, with Southampton some way behind.  Women's SIII was won by Cardiff, well ahead of Southampton.  The final eights division was dominated by Brookes, with four boats before Reading came in in 8th place.  Some way behind were Exeter and Christ Church Oxford, followed by Southampton.  Women's eights had Reading in 5th place, just ahead of Cardiff in 6th.

Further north, Peterborough Head gave a more mixed bag of results.  SII fours was won by Nottingham, just ahead of Staffordshire.  SIII was won by York, who also won Women's Novice.  WSII went to Newcastle, ahead of WSIII winners Nottingham.  Nottingham also did well in the Women's Eights, beating IC and Newcastle, with New Hall College winning Novice.  The fastest University Men's eight was Caius, winning SII ahead of First and Third Trinity.  Emmanuel took SII ahead of York and IC took Novice ahead of Nottingham.

Results from Durham won't be put up because they're simply not very interesting.

28/2/00

The big race over the weekend was the Reading University HORR.  Isis A took the top spot by 13s over their reserves boat, who were in turn 7s clear of Brookes' SII crew (bit of  an unsportsmanlike choice of category some might say).  IC were dissapointed to finish 5th, closely followed by Brookes A.   IC and Brookes took a further 3 slots before OULRC finally broke the deadlock with their SII crew in 18th place.  The big shock of the day was Exeter College Oxford finishing in 22nd place, 3 seconds ahead of Newcastle.  Reading University, who beat Newcastle by 8 seconds last year, had to concede this year, coming in 6 seconds behind.   Bristol novices pulled out a stunning performance, taking the event ahead of Wadham, Linacre, Brookes and Warwick, who all came in ahead of Southampton's first eight, who must have had a very dissapointing race.

The women's event was won by Oxford Uni Women's Lightweights, a good 26 seconds ahead of Brookes' senior 2 boat.  The lightweight's second boat came in just ahead of Reading Uni, with Bath 3 seconds behind.   Brookes picked up the novice trophy, beating Warwick, St Edmund Hall (Ox) and Reading.

29/2/00

Many of the crews at Reading trooped up to Nottingham for the Head of the Trent, allowing some interesting comparisons.  Brookes took S1 and S2 categories, ahead of the Cambridge elite boat.  I don't know which boat this is but, as both Isis boats beat Brookes at Reading, this could create an interesting situation for the boat race.  Nottingham took sixth place, 12 second clear of Durham in eighth.  Brookes also won S3, well clear of Newcastle (17th) and Edinburgh (22nd).   Men's S4 was won by Nottingham ahead of Durham, who took novice ahead of Newcastle.

On the women's front, Nottingham took the top university spot, ahead of Edinburgh, Nottingham (S3), Manchester and Leicester.   Women's S4 was won by York ahead on Nottingham and women's novice went to Manchester ahead of Leeds.

14/3/00

Just some quickies from the Kingston Head.  IC women beat Cambridge Univeristy in the women's races, finishing 11 seconds ahead.  IC also took the Men's novices, finishing in 11.42, 11 seconds clear of Oxford Brookes, who in turn beat Reading winners, Bristol Univeristy, by 8 seconds.

16/3/00

The North of England Head was raced at the weekend, giving another opportunity for the northern univeristies to show their stuff.  Durham took the top honours of the day in the men's category, coming head of the river and winning S1.   They were 14 seconds clear of Newcastle in 5th place.  The remaining results were fairlt tightly bunched, with Manchester in 11th, Durham in 12th, York in 13th and UMIST in 15th.  Durham also took the men's novices, beating Newcastle by 12 seconds, who in turn were well clear of Leeds.

On the women's front, Durham continued to dominate, Winning S2, 11 seconds clear of Newcastle.  York took SIII ten seconds later, with Newcastle finally getting an eights win in the Women's novice, coming in just ahead of the S4 winners, Sheffield.

20/3/00

The Head of the River Race has finally come round.

Brookes had the drop on everyone again, although it was a non-univeristy crew that finished 24 seconds ahead of IC.  Brookes also took 3rd, 5th and 7th, with UL in 4th and Nottingham moving up into 6th (29th overall).  IC seconds crept in ahead of a struggling Durham, whilst Glasgow and Bristol maintained their positions in the mid 50's.  Reading made a big improvement to finish 61st, whilst Emanuell Cambridge bought their S4 boat in 74th.  Dissapointing drops for Newcastle and Edinburgh, both beaten by IC's novices.

SUMMER PREDICTIONS
Who will be making the biggest gains and losses this summer? Check out the completely arbitrary predictions below and laugh when they turn out to be completely wrong later in the year...

Women:

Bristol and IC will, as always, battle it out for the top spot.   IC had the drop at the Women's Head but that was with Queen's Tower on board.   At the moment, I think Bristol have the best shot.  Slightly further down the speed scale, Oxford Univeristy Lightweights are the team to beat.  Excellent results from the Reading Univeristy Head and the Women's Head led up to their win at the Henley Boat Races and they are going to be a tough team to take on, especially over the sprint distances.  Durham and Newcastle are the northern universities to keep an eye on, whilst Bath and Cardiff showed some potential with good results at the Women's Head.   Teams in trouble are Southampton and York, the latter dropping 28 places at the head when almost all the other univeristies gained.  In the novice race, Brookes seem unstoppable, 35 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals at the tideway.

Men:

The top slots will be shared between Oxford, Cambridge, IC and Brookes, with Brookes looking to take the most wins simply through sheer weight of numbers.  Oxford and Cambridge are unlikely to show themselves much before Henley but expect some event winning boats there.  IC just have the fastest BUSA boat, from the tideway results, but it is too close to separate the clubs at the moment.  Other crews to watch out for are Nottingham and Glasgow.  Nottingham came in 29th at the HORR after a run of good results at Wallingford and the Head of the Trent.  Glasgow have dominated the Scottish racing this year and also achieved a good result at the tideway.  Newcastle don't seem as strong this year, although they are always better over a straight course.  Edinburgh have also suffered, ending in a poor position at the tideway.  IC novices will be unbeatable.  Expect them to give many of the senior crews a run for their money by the end of the season.  After that, Brookes and Bristol may be battling it out.

5/4/00

Ok, we're starting to get some feedback on the predictions for the summer.  Nottingham have told me that their S4 boat is in fact Novice and is also faster than IC (1.5 seconds at the HORR).  I will wait with interest to see what the times at BUSA are like...  If you have any other news, views or complaints, get in contact.  It's always good to slag off your opposition, just be careful that you don't end up eating your words later on...

11/5/00

A bit late getting the BUSA results up I know, but here they are none the less.  Lo and Behold, Brookes won pretty much everything in the men's competition, taking MJ4+, MC4+, MC4-, MN8, MC8 and seconds in MJ4+ and MJ8 (despite only having 7 rowers).  Nottingham and Glasgow lived up to my predictions, taking 2nd and 3rd respectivley in the men's eights.  Brookes and Bristol also battled it out in the novices as predicted (in the absence of IC), with brookes coming off the better.

On the women's front, my predictions were back to front.  IC got the drop on Bristol to take the women's championship eights.  Bristol did get the novice eights as a consolation prize though.  Edinburgh dominated the fours events and Newcastle put in some respectible performances to get some silvers and bronzes in most of the races.

16/5/00

Just some quickies as I can't be bothered to write reams.   Strathclyde held host to the Scottish university championships recently.   Edinburgh won men's first fours, women's first and second fours and women's first and second eights.  Glasgow won men's second fours, Strathclyde won men's second eights and men's fourth fours.  St Andrews picked up men's third fours and women's fourth fours and Aberdeen got women's fourth fours.

Notts City wasn't a great deal more interesting.  Nottingham picked up a first in MSI 8's, a second and third in MSII and a second in MSIII and MSIV.   Oriel did well, picking up a second place in MSII on Saturday, ahead of Nottingham and Caius.  Newcastle Novices got a first and second wit IC taking WSI and WSII on consecutive days.
