Enclosures

At safe havens you will find display quality enclosures for a variety of pets. We have spent many hours researching the effects of off gassing and determining what are the safest cage materials in order to provide you with a non-health threatening enclosure. We make our enclosures with lightweight plywood with pine framing (for safety and portability), water-based acrylics, and low VOC (volatile organic compound) coatings and stains to provide your pet with a safe and easy to move around home.

The effects of off gassing may be a controversial issue, but we believe it's not worth the risk. Formaldehyde gas, benzene and arsenic may not harm your pet immediately, but there are enough studies showing the long term effects on people that their presence in your reptiles home should be a concern. Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas that can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat, nausea, coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, skin rashes, and allergic reactions. It is also known to cause cancer in humans and animals. Formaldehyde is one of the more “pleasant” chemicals that off-gas. There is much evidence showing the long-term problems in humans from these chemicals, what is it doing to your pets that are in a more confined space? All known types of MDF (medium density fiberboard) are pressure-bonded with Urea Formaldehyde resins, making them all potentially dangerous (plus its quite heavy making your pets cage very difficult to move).
