The Birmingham Bulls of the East Coast
Hockey League
 Art
Clarkson brought hockey back to life in 1992, when he began a franchise in
the East Coast Hockey League. The new Bulls, complete with a new
look and color scheme, was soon a contender in the ECHL. In 1997,
the team was sold to a new ownership group, who also owned the ECHL
Jacksonville Lizard Kings. That ownership group was criticized for
having a severe conflict of interest, as Birmingham was never seen as
their priority team. By 2000, the ownership group, also now the
owners of the AFL2 Steeldogs, sought to sell the Bulls. In
2001, Charlotte Hornets owner George Shinn announced that he was
purchasing the team and planned to move them to Atlantic City, NJ.
The organization stayed a few seasons as the Atlantic City Boardwalk
Bullies, even winning the Kelly Cup once. Shinn's interest was
short-lived, as he eventually sold the team. The franchise now
exists as the ECHL Stockton Thunder in Stockton, CA. For

team in Birmingham.
