A Game of Thrones Series
I have only read the first book, but the series is apparently very popular.
Brainship Series
Interesting concept, take a child who can't survive without massive life support and put them in a shell. Then put the shell inside a starship and let them do the piloting. If I ever run a science fiction campaign I'll probably use the tech idea. The stories are fun to read, although aimed at teens I think. Anne McCafferey is the lead author, with most of the books having a co-author.
Federated Telepath Series
I don't know the real name of the series. I am not sure if the books listed comprise more than one series or not. The first one takes place in our time, while books three thru at least six are based upon Rowan and her off-spring. I like the form of psionics used, but after Damia's Children the series got boring to me.
Freedom Series
Aliens invade Earth, capture a bunch of humans and strand them on another planet to force them to make a new colony. I could use the basic background as the reason for a D&D world to exist. The first book was good. The second and third books dragged. The plot was to simplistic, based upon the colony leading a revolt against the aliens, Eosi, who run the empire that conquered Earth. The revolt was to easy, and to dependent upon another set of aliens (Farmers) offering total protection of the colony from the Eosi. I would have found it much better if the revolt had been harder or if the story went more into how the colony was settled and developed instead.
Spellsong War Series
Woman is transported from Earth to a world where magic works. Of course the magic is based upon singing and music, which was her profession on Earth. Since singing on Earth could be studied without making magic, she knows more theory and such than the locals about music. She also has a huge base of songs to draw upon where the locals don't.
The Mechanical Sky
Islam conquers the Earth and space and rules for over a 1,000 years.
The Serrano Legacy (Familias) Series
This is another fine series, but one I've read out of order. I think I've read all of them though. I think that the first three were also sold as a single volume at one point, which is what I read.
Vatta's War Series
A different universe than the Familias, the story revolves around a young merchant captain. Good ideas about merchant ships for an author who's background is Marine Corp instead of Merchant Marine.
