Outer space has been settled in the Dolist universe. There are near-Earth habitats, lunar colonies, a couple of new colonies on Mars and the asteroid belt is being settled.
Near Earth space has been heavily settled with the completion of a couple of score space stations. Power satellites are beaming energy to earth. Cheap power is available in many areas of the developed world. There is regular transportation between Earth, Earth-orbit and the Moon. Fares are expensive and tough to gain permission to travel on. Pretty much a person has to be company sponsored, government / military or similar to book passage.
There are a dozen colonies on the surface and sub-surface of the moon. There are also a large number of L-5 colonies in the LaGrange Points.
Lunar surface & sub-surface colonies are nationality based or commercially based. All the major trans-national companies have a lunar presence.
L-5 colonies tend to be relatively small with regards to population. Each colony generally has a specific background
Mars is settled by a number of companies, in particular Hansen Industries, Westinghouse, General Electric and Lockheed Martin. There are five major settlements; one run by each major company except that Hansen Industries has two settlements. Hansen Industries second settlement is restricted to psis only. It is significantly smaller than the other settlements and unlike the other ones, it is not a mining colony. There are also a number of much smaller settlements, usually run by small extended families that have completed their prison terms or paid off their transit debt.
Mars is primarily a mining colony. The big companies mine ores that are shipped back to Earth and to various orbital facilities. Most of the planet’s production actually goes towards local improvements and infrastructure. Mars is a long-term investment. Mars acts in part as a safety valve by providing Earth a place to dump the unwanted. More importantly, it makes economic sense to provide a source of material other than Earth to provide the asteroid belt settlements. The big companies are provided major subsidies by the Earth governments plus they have been granted mineral and land rights to large parts of Mars outside of the immediate colony areas.
The belt is just being settled at the start of the game.
