Sky World Climate

Sky World's climate is relatively simple and consistent. Seasonal temperatures, precipitation, wind direction and wind speed are the same for any given latitude. Wind direction and wind speed follows latitude bands. The descriptions below are for winter. In the summer, all the bands move north 5 degrees.

On Earth, one degree of latitude (north to south) is 60 miles, while one minute of latitude is one mile. On Sky World, one minute of latitude is 10 miles and 1 degree is 600 miles. Earth is thus 21,600 around from North Pole to North Pole. Sky World is 216,000 miles from pole to pole.

From the North Pole, 90 degrees, to 75 degrees are the Polar Calms. Winds are light and variable.

From roughly 75 degrees to 60 degrees latitude are the Northeasterly Trades. Winds blow steadily from the northeast to the southwest.

From 60 degrees latitude to 45 degrees latitude are the Southwesterly Trades. Winds blow steadily form the west, southwest to the northeast. The junction between the two Trade Winds at 60 degrees is given over to gusts and turbulence.

From 45 degrees to 30 degrees are the High Pressure Doldrums, or Horse Latitudes. Winds are light and of variable direction. There tend to be down drafts that are dangerous to heavily laden vessels.

From 30 degrees to 15 degrees are Northeast Trades. Winds are steady and constant.

From 15 degrees to the Equator are the Low Pressure Doldrums. Winds are light and intermittant.
