"Actually, I'm lieing to you. I don't really know much about my parents," I said. "Really?" he said almost happily. There was an awkward silence. "So this is some...uhhh...good pie. I'll have to thank your mom when I get inside." Things got quiet again. "Talking about your parents made me realize I have a confession to make," Onrysu said softly as he lowered his eyes toward the ground. "What is it?" I asked. Iwas kind ofcnerned. I didn't know what he was going to say. Did he know I was lieing? "I...uhhh..." I could tell he didn't want to say whatever he was thinking at that moment. "I made the pie not my mom," he blurted out quickly. "That's it? You were that worried about telling me you made the pie?" "No that's not really what I wanted to say. I wanted to say that....I....well you see I..." "Just say whatever's on your mind. You'll feel a lot better if you do," I said. "This week we've become really good friends and I feel like we have a lot in common. It's wierd, but I feel like I've known you before this." "I feel like that too," I said. "I feel bad leading you on like this." His eyes lowered to the ground again as he played with the remains of his cherry pie. "The people you think are my parents aren't my real parents." "What do you mean?" I said suprised. "Well you see, and you can think me crazy if you want, but...when I was a little boy I lived far away from here in a kingdom. I lived in a kingdom in the clouds. Crazy huh?" "Not as crazy as you think," I said with a smirk. He gave me a strange look and then continued with his story. "Well my dad was a knight. He was the head of all the knights actually. Their job was to protect the queen of the kingdom, under the Mistress Knight of course." "The Mistress Knight?" I asked. I wanted to know who she was, but for some reason I thought I already knew. "The Mistress Knight was a very powerful woman. She comanded the army and was the leader in charge of protecting the queen. She was the second in command in the kingdom under the queen too. She was very beautiful. She had long, flowing purple hair and wore the most beautiful dresses and was a very nice woman. She would always come out and play with the village kids and visit with the adults. Anyway, my mother was a school teacher. She loved my father very much. The day was beautiful, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and there was a cool breeze rusling through the golden leaves near my house. I thought the day was perfect, but my dad thought otherwise. He was very tense the whole morning and decided he wanted to ride into town and talk to the Mistress Knight and the queen. My mother needed some fruit so we went out with my father. I went off on my own and walked around town. I knew everyone since I was the son of the "Greatest Knight in the Kingdom." While i was walking around I went into a garden near the edge of town. I saw a small glow from the garden and went in to see what it was. You're not gonna believe this-" "What?! What was it?" I asked eagerly. I wasn't sure why I was so eager to know what it was. What is it? Just tell me. I want to know who it is. Who? What do I mean who? I thought. I just had to know what or who it was, and why I thought it was even a person at all. "It was a small dragon. I think I startled her at first because when I walked in she turned her head to see me and she burned some of the roses in the garden. Well she would have burned them if she had more fire comming from her mouth. They got a little singed at least," he giggled. "Anyway, I said 'hello' to her. She was very shy at first then she said 'hello'. She told me she was learning to breathe fire like her mother. I asked her to show me so she drew in a big breathe. She blew out with all her might and finally the smallest little flame came from her mouth. It was no more than a few inches long and all it did was set a single petal on fire, but her eyes lit up like the sun. I smiled and told her to try again. She did and this time she let out a great big burst of fire. I told her she should go show her mom. That's when the skies grew dark. Little did we know, but the perfect day of gladness would soon turn to the perfect day of sadness. An evil woman came down upon the kingdom. She destroyed our homes and sent her followers to destroy anything and everything in our town while she went looking for the Mistress Knight. Mothers were running around frantically looking for their sons and daughters and husbands were looking for thier wives. Everyone was screaming and babies were crying as building burned to the ground. My new friend and I huttled together in fear. Suddenly I felt a pair of strong hands lift me onto a horse. It was my father and my mother was behind me. I sadly waved goodbye to my friend and I saw a single tear of fear and sadness fall from her small, silver eye. That was the last time I saw her, or anyone from my home again. My family rode to the edge of town. I could still hear the screams and cries comming from my home. My father got off of the horse and then slowely lifted me down. My mom was crying softly behind me. She tried to hold back her tears, but was unsuccessful. I heard another horse coming towards us. It was the blacksmith. He was my father's best and most trusted friend. He was the man that made my father's armor too. His wife was with him, she was a nurse. She hugged my mother tightly and my father and the blacksmith shook hands and gave each other a look that had a thousand words behind it. Then my father leaned down to talk to me. He said in a sad voice 'Son, your mother and I love you very much. We don't want to see you killed with the rest of the kingdom, so you're going to go with these nice people.' 'You'll come too right?' I asked innocently, even though in my heart i knew they weren't coming along. 'No son. We can't,' he said quietly. 'Your mother and I wish we could, but we are needed here. I have to command my troops. You understand right?' 'Daddy, I understand why you have to stay, but why can't mommy come with me?' I asked almost in tears. My mom got down on her knees and said, 'My place is with your father. I love him and I promised to stay by his side whenever he needed me. He needs me now. Some day you'll understand son.' 'Be strong son. You alwasy wanted to be a knight right?' my dad asked. 'Yes' I said. 'Well here is your chance. Have the courage of a soldier and the heart of a knight. Watch over your knew family and protect them with all of your strength. OK?' "OK,dad,' I said softly. My mother hugged me and softly kissed my forhead, I could feel each of her tears as they dropped into my hair. My father lifted me up onto tthe blacksmith's horse and told them to leave. The next thing I knewI was speeding away on someone elses horse in someone else's arms. The last vision I have of my parents is my father standing sternly in his suit of armor with his sword in one hand and my mother in his other arm with her face buried into his shoulder sobbing. A single tear glistened as it fell from my father's eye. Everything happened so quick and it was so much for me to take in that I must have fallen asleep. The next thing I knew I woke up in the arms of the blacksmith's wife, who was watching her husband begin to build a home for us on earth. My kingdom in the clouds was gone, and my family gone with it. The next thing I thought about was my new friend the little dragon, who had just learned to breathe fire and would never be able to show her mother. She'd never be able to use her new found talent again. For years I dreamed of that day, of my parents, of the little dragon, and of the woman who caused all this death and distruction." Onrysu looked as though he was going to break down and cry right there on the spot. He held back his tears well. I pulled him towards me and placed his head on my shoulder. He hugged me and softly began to cry. I tried to confort him, but all I could think about was that little dragon. Why did she seem so familiar? Why did his meeting with the dragon seem so familiar? I know why...the little dragon was me. |
